Chapter 029 Mr. Montgomery, Has Anyone Told…
"It's okay. I have plenty of gowns. You can pick another one."
Angela opened her closet and let Grace choose at will.
"Angela, pick out a simple gown for me. I'm going to wash my face," Grace said before walking into the nearby restroom.
In no time, Grace had washed off her makeup. "Angela, let me use your cosmetics."
"What are you doing, Grace?" Angela asked, curiously.
As Grace applied makeup, she spoke, "If anyone asks for me, tell them I already left. I'll go down as Grace, so no one will bother me."
From a young age, Grace's mother had told her that beauty was not a mistake, but the world was too complicated, and beauty could bring a lot of trouble. Her mother only hoped she would lead an ordinary life.
Grace quickly finished with her makeup, her skin gradually becoming shades darker, her beautiful face becoming plain.
Seeing this, Angela sighed. "I can't understand you. If I were as beautiful as you, I'd go out without makeup every day."
Grace put on the dress Angela had picked out for her. It was a long dress that covered her legs, but it added a different charm. No matter what she wore, Grace looked wonderful.
"Let's go downstairs. If Edith doesn't see you, she'll start looking for you again," Grace proposed, diverting her attention from the subject.
"Okay!" Angela agreed.
Grace and Angela soon appeared downstairs. All the while, Ryan had been frantically searching for that ‘beautiful woman’. He anxiously went to ask Angela for help, only to find Angela and Grace standing together.
He thought, ‘This unsightly woman is so annoying. She even followed me here!’
"Angela, where's your friend? I haven't seen her," Ryan asked, ignoring Grace.
"Ryan, this is your fiancée. Shouldn't you be more concerned about your soon-to-be wife?" Angela challenged him.
Ryan glanced at Grace disdainfully and said, "Just tell me where she is."
"Perhaps you should ask your date," suggested a nearby guest.
"Kelly? What happened?" He was embarrassed when Kelly returned in a disheveled state, which made him feel ashamed, so he had someone take her home.
"Kelly caused trouble with a friend of mine and even threw a glass of red wine on her, so my friend left," the guest relayed the incident.
"She left? What's her name? Where does she live?" Ryan probed, his persistence clear.
"Why does it matter to you? Ryan, you have a fiancée and a girlfriend. And now you're asking about another woman," Angela's frustration was evident in her tone.
"Angela, don't make it sound so ugly," Ryan retorted, visibly upset.
"Isn't what she's saying the truth?" Grace asked calmly, her gaze sharp. "Or did she hit a nerve, and that's why you're so angry?" she prodded.
"Grace, you are in no position to criticize me," Ryan spat out disdainfully.
Grace let out a sarcastic laugh, finding Ryan's behavior ridiculous.
"Why are you laughing? You're not allowed to laugh at me," Ryan grumbled, mistaking Grace's amusement for mockery.
"So what? You realize you're being ridiculous?" she teased.
"You!" Ryan, with rage building up, lifted his hand intending to strike Grace.
Suddenly, his wrist was tightly held. "Mr. Ryan Montgomery, you are at the Turner family's gala. Please refrain from making a scene," the voice of Omari came from behind.
Tonight, after the gala, Omari would be the new head of the Turner family. Ryan knew better than to offend Omari. Angrily withdrawing his hand, he left the scene.
Grace faced Omari, saying, "Thank you, Omari."
"No problem. I was surprised to see you here tonight," Omari said, a hint of a smile in his eyes.
"Why wouldn't I be? It's such an important event, and I certainly wouldn't miss it. Congratulations on taking over the Turner family," he extended his well wishes.
"Thank you. It's all part of my responsibilities. Have you had dinner? I can get you something to eat, how about that?" Omari offered kindly.
Grace was about to decline when she felt the piercing and icy stare of someone. Turning her gaze, she saw Xavier holding a wine glass, looking at her coldly.
Grace chuckled lightly, unaware that Omari's expression softened further upon seeing her smile.
"No need, Omari. You're busy, and there are plenty of people waiting for you. I'll just look around on my own," she politely declined.
"All right, let me know if there's anything you need," Omari said cordially.
"Grace, have you noticed Omari treats you even better than me?" Angela approached with a hint of envy.
"You’re reading too much into it. Omari is just being polite because I'm a guest. Angela, I see someone I know. I'm going to say hello," Grace excused herself.
"Okay," Angela replied, having her own matters to attend to.
Grace, with a wine glass in hand, walked towards Xavier, who was observing her from a distance.
"Mr. Montgomery, isn't it boring for you to be here alone? Would you like a drink?" Grace offered the glass to him.
Grace didn't realize that her gesture had been seen by others.
Someone remarked, "Look! That woman is so unattractive yet she has the nerve to offer Mr. Montgomery a drink."
"Isn't she just asking to be rejected? Mr. Montgomery didn't even accept a drink from Jessica. This plain Jane really doesn't know her place. Now this is going to be entertaining," a guest sneered.
Nearby, one of Jessica's friends commented, "Jessica, look. That woman is daring to disturb Mr. Montgomery."
Jessica glanced over and saw Grace. She sneered, "Mr. Montgomery won't give her the time of day."
Grace immediately regretted offering the drink. She just wanted to share a drink with Xavier because he was the only person there, she knew besides Angela, but she had forgotten about Xavier’s identity.
Xavier said nothing, and Grace didn't feel embarrassed. She was about to retract her hand when he reached out and took the drink. His action caused the people around to gasp.
"What's going on between that woman and Mr. Montgomery? He took the drink she offered, but just a moment ago he refused Jessica's," someone murmured, in disbelief.
Many eyes turned to Jessica, who became the butt of the joke. She had expected that Xavier would not accept the drink, yet he did, and that made her look foolish.
She glared at Grace, wanting to know who she woman was.
Someone nearby mentioned, "That woman seems to be Mr. Ryan Montgomery's fiancée. If that's the case, Mr. Montgomery is her uncle. They are family. His acceptance of her drink must be just to save her from embarrassment."
Hearing this, Jessica breathed a sigh of relief.
Grace was unaware of how many eyes were on her; she was only looking at the man in front of her. Indeed, this man was always the center of attention wherever he went.
"Mr. Montgomery, has anyone told you how handsome you look tonight?" Grace complimented, coyly.
Xavier swiftly consumed the drink Grace had handed to him. The movement of his Adam's apple as he swallowed added to his allure, making him quite appealing.
"Don't try to flatter me," he said.
