Chapter 217 Betting on Xavier, Aren't You Afraid He'll Get Angry?
Grace showed up at the spot in the evening, with Xavier by her side.
The bar belonged to Victor, and his private room was always open for friends.
Victor and Isaac were already there, drinking and chatting. They even started betting. "I bet Xavier likes Grace. I mean, we haven't hung out with him much. That guy never helps anyone, let alone a woman," Victor said.
"I'll bet a dollar that there's something between them," Victor chimed in.
"Just a dollar? You're so stingy. Aren't you scared Xavier will find out and give you a hard time?" Isaac teased.
"What's there to be scared of? He won't eat us alive, and Grace can handle him. So, you in or not?" Victor replied.
"I don't think it's that simple. Xavier's seen too much to fall for someone easily," Isaac analyzed.
"Who knows? Feelings don't follow logic. Sometimes the impossible happens," Victor countered, thinking Xavier's behavior was unusual; Xavier had never shown this kind of interest in anyone before..
"So, are you betting or not?" Victor pressed.
"I..." Isaac started, but then they heard the door.
Grace and Xavier walked in. Grace looked like her usual self, plain and familiar.
"Xavier, Victor bet on you, and only for a dollar!" Isaac immediately ratted out Victor.
Despite all the teasing, the three of them were close friends; no one took it seriously.
"Really, what was the bet?" Xavier asked, leading Grace to a seat.
Victor and Isaac quickly made room for them.
"Just betting on what time you'd show up," Victor deflected, not wanting Xavier to know they were joking about Grace.
"I'll get more drinks. Tonight, we're drinking till we're drunk with Grace!" Victor called for more drinks, filling the table.
Victor sent the waitstaff away and poured drinks himself.
He poured Xavier half a glass, but when he poured for Grace, Xavier stopped him. "She's got a cold; she can't drink that much."
Victor shot Isaac a look, as if to say, "See, I was right."
After a quick glance, Victor noticed Xavier's watch. He grabbed Xavier's wrist excitedly. "So it was you!"
"What?" Xavier frowned, confused by Victor's excitement.
Victor stared at the watch on Xavier's wrist, eyes gleaming. "I've been eyeing this watch forever. It's a limited edition. I wondered who got it. Turns out, it's you!"
With awe, Victor reached for the watch. "Come on, did you pull some tech magic to get this?"
Xavier pulled his hand back and shoved Victor away. "No."
He hadn't realized the watch was so special.
"Then how'd you get it?" Victor pressed. "How about I buy it off you? You have tons of watches, even pricier ones. You don't need this one."
"Not for sale."
"Why not? Oh, I get it! You value our friendship and plan to gift it to me, right? Thanks, man!" Victor almost knelt in gratitude.
Xavier pushed him away. "Get lost, I'm not giving it."
"Xavier, you're so cold-blooded!" Victor's eyes were glued to the watch.
"Is this your first day knowing me?" Xavier shrugged, unfazed.
"Fine, then you have to drink more tonight as a penalty!"
Xavier didn't mind; he downed his glass in one go.
"Xavier, you're so straightforward. This watch must be important to you. Was it a gift?" Victor said casually, noticing Grace's ears turning red.
Could it be true? Was the watch a gift from Grace?
"Never mind, let's drink. Grace, let me toast to you," Victor turned to Grace.
Grace picked up her glass. "I should be toasting you. You've helped me so much. I don't know how to thank you."
"No need for formalities. I didn't do much. Your thanks aren't necessary," Victor said, glancing at Xavier. It was Xavier who had done most of the helping.
In reality, before he could act, Xavier had already taken care of things.
"Then I'll drink first." Victor downed his drink.
Just as Grace was about to drink, Xavier stopped her. "She has a cold and can't drink. Get her some juice," he ordered.
"This is a bar; we only serve alcohol. How about some milk?" Victor suggested.
'Does Xavier realize how much he's protecting Grace?' Victor wondered. Xavier probably didn't even notice how much he cared.
"I'm fine. I'm feeling better and haven't taken any medicine. Drinking should be okay," Grace said, not wanting to spoil the fun.
But Victor stopped her. "No need, I was just joking. I'll get some drinks. My bad, I didn't know you had a cold."
Victor quickly had drinks brought over, and to Grace's surprise, it was milk. The milk looked out of place among all the red wine.
"Here you go, Grace. Now you can drink."
"Thank you. Next time, if you're available, I'll definitely take you up on that offer for a real drink," Grace said, holding the milk carton, aware of Xavier's good intentions.
"Alright, it's a deal." Victor agreed casually. Then, turning to Grace, he added, "I must say, Grace, you're really growing on me."
Without missing a beat, Xavier's intense gaze locked onto Victor, though Victor wasn't fazed at all.
