Chapter 302 It Seems That the Goddess of Fuck is Not on Her Side
If Grace could really pull a fast one right under his nose without him noticing, then that would be quite a skill on her part.
Sterling made a gesture inviting her to proceed, and Grace picked up the cards on the table and began to shuffle.
She shuffled the cards normally, then drew a portion from the middle, dealing three cards each to herself and Sterling.
The game was very simple, just comparing the value of the cards.
Grace started with a terrible hand, unable to form anything, while Sterling had a pair, winning the first round easily.
Although there were three chances, losing the first round already put considerable pressure on Grace.
Then Grace shuffled the cards again, and soon it was the second round. The cards were on the table, but Grace hesitated to pick them up.
She felt uncertain, especially with the overwhelming pressure from Sterling.
For Sterling, winning or losing this game didn't matter, but for Grace, it was different.
Sterling said, "What's the matter, Ms. Lewis? Afraid to even look at your cards?"
"Not at all." Grace picked up her cards.
She had a straight, which was a decent hand.
Grace finally breathed a sigh of relief.
She thought, 'I should have a chance, right? Sterling couldn't be that lucky to have a better hand than mine?'
"Do you want to look first, or should I?" Sterling hadn't looked at his cards yet, but his imposing presence was enough to intimidate.
But now Grace didn't know what cards Sterling had, so everything was uncertain, and she couldn't celebrate too early.
Grace said, "Either way is fine."
Sterling revealed his cards, and it turned out to be a flush, which was higher than a straight.
Grace lost the second round.
Sterling observed Grace's hand and remarked, "Ms. Lewis, you seem to be quite fortunate with dealing, but perhaps not as lucky when it comes to drawing. It appears Lady Luck isn't favoring you today. This is your final chance—the third round. Are you sure you want to proceed?"
This round undoubtedly put even more pressure on Grace.
If she lost this round, it meant she would have to stab herself.
Sterling said, "Ms. Lewis, you can still back out now. As I said earlier, if you help me get the core of that project, everything between us can be written off, and I'll even give you a handsome reward."
"No need, let's start." Grace said, picking up the cards and shuffling again.
Her palms were sweaty as she dealt three cards each to herself and Sterling.
Grace didn't rush to look at her cards. She knew that God wasn't on her side, so she had to rely on herself.
Grace's eyes darkened, and she said, "Mr. Wallace, do you mind if we change the rules?"
Sterling asked, "What kind of rules?"
Grace said, "Since it's all about comparing card values, why don't we play it separately, one card at a time, best two out of three."
Sterling asked, "What makes you think I'll agree to that?"
Grace chuckled softly, "Mr. Wallace, let's just regard I'm reluctant to end this so soon and would love to play a few more rounds with you."
Grace's words made Sterling smile. He said, "Are you so confident that your cards will be better than mine if we play separately?"
Grace said, "How would we know if we don't try?"
Sterling couldn't help but admire the confidence on Grace's face. She wasn't exactly a knockout, but there was something about her that was kinda charming.
She was the type to take on her friend's problems like they were her own, and you don't see that kind of guts every day.
Plus, it was pretty rare to find someone who'd not only step up to gamble with him but also have such rotten luck with the cards.
Sterling had gambled with a ton of people, and by now, most of them would be shaking in their boots, some even begging for mercy.
But Grace? She was cool as a cucumber, just like Xavier.
"Alright," Sterling said, agreeing to her terms.
Grace figured Sterling might just go with the top card without even looking, leaving it all to chance.
But nope, he picked up his three cards, checked them out, and then chose one to lay down.
Grace picked up her cards too. As expected, it seemed like the universe was out to get her today. She had a three, a four, and a ten.
These were the crappiest cards, and Sterling's couldn't be worse. She was doomed.
Even knowing she was gonna lose, Grace still put down the four first.
Sterling's guy flipped the card, and it was a King. No surprise, Sterling won that one.
Grace quickly played her highest card, the ten.
The guy in black revealed the card, and to Grace's shock, Sterling had an eight.
So she won this round!
But what was the point? She only had a four left. Unless Sterling had a three, she was toast.
Grace knew she was gonna lose, but she still played by the rules, pushing her card forward like a boss.
The cards were face down, and no one knew what they were.
Sterling held his card between his fingers, flipping it a few times, making it impossible to see.
Sterling said, "Grace, this is the last time I'm asking. Are you sure you want to go through with the last card?"
"Since it's a wager, it should be honored no matter what. Turn the cards," Grace said, keeping her cool.
Sterling said, "Do you know where I'll stab you? One stab could end your life. Even if you end up in the hospital, you still wouldn't take something from Xavier?"
"This is between you and me. It has nothing to do with Xavier."
Sterling's card fell, his fingers tapping the table, making a sound.
"You win." Sterling stood up, giving Grace one last look before leaving the room.
Grace thought, 'The cards haven't even been revealed, and I win?'
After Sterling left, Grace flipped over Sterling's card. She was stunned; it was a three?
Outside, Angela was pacing back and forth, worried sick about what was going on inside.
Then the door opened, and Sterling, looking sharp in his suit, walked out with his crew.
Sterling didn't even glance at Angela and walked straight out of the bar.
The guy following Sterling was confused. "Mr. Wallace, your card was..."
Sterling had been playing cards since he was five, and his skills were probably better than a magician's. He should have...
A look from Sterling shut the guy up.
A luxury car was parked at the entrance. Seeing Sterling come out, the driver opened the car door.
Sterling sat in the back, the light from the bar's entrance streaming into the car, lighting up half his face while the other half stayed in shadow.
Sterling raised his hand, revealing a card, the King of Spades.
