Chapter 607 Handing His Heirloom to Grace
Jared sneered, "Why don't you take a wild guess, or better yet, just kill me already?"
Jared was the kind of guy who didn't give a damn about his own life. He'd played this psychological game more times than he could count.
He knew Xavier wouldn't dare kill him; otherwise, he wouldn't have used a fake gun.
The ruckus between Jared and Xavier inside had caught Scott and Steven's attention outside.
They burst through the door and saw Jared breaking free, with Xavier pinning him to the ground.
Scott rushed in and quickly tied Jared up again. "What happened? He got loose?"
"Yeah," Xavier replied.
Seeing Jared securely tied up, Xavier finally let go.
A gun lay on the floor nearby. Scott picked it up, and Xavier said, "It's fake."
"Fake? Why didn't you carry a real one?" Scott asked.
Even though it was illegal for regular folks to carry guns in Vesperia, Xavier's status meant he could easily get a permit.
"Xavier, you better think about what I said. I don't mind taking a bunch of people down with me," Jared said with a nasty grin, blood still on his lips from Scott's earlier punch.
Xavier didn't even look at him and walked out of the room.
Scott followed. "What did he say to you? What's he mean by taking a bunch of people down with him?"
Could Jared have some backup plan they didn't know about?
Xavier shook his head. "Nothing. Where's Grace?"
"She's over there making a call," Scott pointed. Xavier walked over and saw Grace.
...
Grace couldn't help but call Dorian.
The call connected, and Dorian's voice came through, "Hello?"
Hearing his voice, Grace felt a lump in her throat.
In Aetheria, it was the middle of the night.
Dorian paused, seeing the call was from Vesperia. Even though Grace hadn't spoken, he had a hunch.
"Is this Grace Lewis?" Dorian asked.
Grace's eyes welled up. She was talking to her father.
Though her mother had passed away, her father was still alive in this world.
"It's me," Grace replied softly.
"What's wrong?" Dorian's voice was filled with concern.
"Nothing. You said I could call you anytime, so I just wanted to check in. Did I wake you?" Grace's tears fell, but she tried to keep her emotions in check.
They hadn't done a DNA test, but everything pointed to Dorian being her father.
That kind of blood connection couldn't be faked. She never felt this way when she thought Jared was her father.
"No, no, I was just about to get up."
"You..." Grace started to speak but then bit her lip, unsure of what to say.
Sensing something was off, Dorian asked, "Did something happen? Did Jared do something to you? Are you okay?"
"No, nothing happened. I just wanted to ask if everything was okay after you got back. How's Jane?"
"I have people watching Jane. Nothing will happen to her."
Neither Dorian nor Grace mentioned his memory.
Perhaps he would never remember that part of his life, leaving a permanent void and regret.
Grace and Dorian didn't talk much, just a few simple words.
Grace quickly ended the call and turned to see Xavier standing a short distance away, looking at her with a tender gaze.
Xavier didn't come over to interrupt. He kept his distance, not eavesdropping, but silently watching over Grace, ensuring her safety.
Grace put away her phone and walked over. "Did you finish talking to Jared?"
"Yeah," Xavier said, raising his hand to wipe Grace's tears.
Grace wasn't one for dramatics. She wiped her tears quickly. "I just called Dorian. I don't know if he..."
Xavier understood. He lifted Grace's chin, making her look at him. "I'll take you to see him next time."
"Okay. By the way, what did Jared say to you?"
"Nothing much. He wants me to convince you to give him what he wants."
"But I really don't know what he wants. He said it's something my mom left behind. Everything my mom left is with me. I'll go back and look."
She needed to search thoroughly.
If it were something important, there would be clues. But Jared wouldn't say what it was, making it hard to find. Grace even suspected that Jared had already searched her place while she was away and, not finding it, was now trying to force her to hand it over.
"I'll go with you."
Xavier and Grace headed back. On the way, Xavier took out the crystal he had taken from Jared and held it in his hand.
Grace leaned over. "What's that?"
It looked familiar. She remembered Xavier had sent her a photo of it before.
Grace recalled, "Didn't you ask me if I recognized this crystal?"
"What? Have you seen it?" Xavier asked again.
Grace said, "I think I saw it at Brittany's place a couple of times. Is it hers? How did you get it?"
"It's not Brittany's. It's mine," Xavier said.
"Can I see it?" Grace extended her hand.
Xavier handed it to Grace without hesitation. Anything important to him, he would give to Grace unconditionally.
As Grace held the crystal, her wrist adorned with the hand chain, she examined it closely.
Now, the only two things his mother had left were in Grace's hands.
Grace didn't know the significance of the crystal to Xavier. She just thought it was pretty, though not particularly valuable. But since Xavier kept it, it must be important to him.
"Why haven't I seen it before?" Grace was curious.
She should have seen everything Xavier kept close.
Xavier said, "It's a family heirloom."
Grace laughed, "Then you should keep it safe and pass it down."
She didn't look down on it at all, nor did she dislike it for being cheap.
Instead, she handled it carefully, afraid of damaging Xavier's heirloom.
Grace tried to return it to Xavier, but he held her hand. "You keep it for me."
"But it's your heirloom. It must be important. I'm afraid I'll lose it," Grace said, hesitant to take on the responsibility.
Even keeping the hand chain for Xavier made Grace cautious, checking daily to ensure it was still on her wrist, never daring to take it off.
