Chapter 231 Retaliate in the Same Way
Grace had been fixated on her mom's ashes. That afternoon, she dropped by Zach's place and subtly asked if he knew any secrets about her or her mom. Judging by his reaction, he seemed clueless.
She also mentioned Patrick had taken her mom's ashes. Zach shrugged it off, showing zero concern. Grace wasn't shocked; she had already seen through Zach's true colors and was used to his indifference.
Determined to get her mom's ashes back, Grace was stuck on how to do it.
Patrick was a jerk, and she thought about messing with the Montgomery family grave to get back at him. But she couldn't bring herself to do something so low, even if Patrick deserved it.
Plus, even if she could get into the Montgomery cemetery, Patrick might not care if she took the ancestors' ashes.
Then Ryan texted her from a new number: [Grace, you're not the only woman around Xavier. Think those other women will let you off easy if they find out about your affair?]
Grace's heart skipped a beat. Was Ryan threatening her?
There were plenty of women into Xavier, and the craziest was Stephanie. If Stephanie found out about her and Xavier, she'd definitely come after her.
Grace wasn't scared but already had enough on her plate and didn't need more drama.
Stephanie couldn't stand any rivals and looked down on everyone. Even though she and Xavier weren't officially together, she wanted to claim him and get rid of any other women around him. To Stephanie, anyone near Xavier was a threat.
Grace had seen Stephanie's ruthless side before. But if Stephanie came after her, she was ready. She knew what she was getting into when she got involved with Xavier.
As she mulled over these thoughts, her phone rang. Expecting it to be Ryan again, she was surprised to see Xavier's name on the caller ID.
Grace had been debating whether to call Xavier, but he beat her to it. Did Ryan say something to him?
She didn't know what Xavier and Ryan had talked about.
After a brief hesitation, Grace answered. Before Xavier could speak, she apologized. "I'm sorry."
"Why are you apologizing?" Xavier sounded confused.
"Did Ryan come to you and cause trouble? He came to me this afternoon and thought we were unclear. I said even if we had a thing, it was none of his business. I didn't mean anything by it. If it caused you any trouble, you can scold me." Grace braced herself for a scolding.
"Ryan knowing is no big deal," Xavier said, unfazed.
To Xavier, this was a minor issue. With his status, no one could dictate who he was with.
"You're really not mad?" Grace asked cautiously.
"Do you want me to be mad?"
"Of course not, I want you to be happy every day," Grace said sincerely.
Xavier chuckled softly, his voice dropping to a low, magnetic tone. "Suck-up."
Every time she talked to Xavier on the phone, it felt like he was whispering in her ear, and Grace's ears turned red.
"I'm not flattering you, it's true. I hope we can all be happy every day, without any worries."
Despite her own concerns, Grace always tried to stay positive and face life's challenges head-on.
"You seem pretty perceptive. Something tough happen?" Xavier asked.
Grace didn't bring up her mom's ashes with him. Even though Xavier had helped her a lot, she wanted to handle this herself.
"You probably already know what Patrick did, right?" Grace asked.
Xavier, always in the know, replied, "I might not know exactly what you're talking about, but I know a lot of what Patrick's been up to." He had people keeping tabs on Patrick.
"Okay," Grace said, thinking, 'The world of the strong is really nice. When will I be as strong as Xavier? Only by growing strong myself can I prevent others from posing a threat to me.'
"Thanks, Xavier."
"No need to thank me. You don't blame me for not telling you in advance?" Xavier asked.
Grace realized that Xavier had no obligation to inform her, and even if Xavier had warned her, her mom's ashes would still be with Patrick, leaving her in the same situation.
"You've already helped me a lot," Grace said, knowing right from wrong.
"But I do want to ask you something. I mean no offense to you or your mother," Grace continued.
"Go ahead."
"If this happened to you, what would you do?"
Xavier didn't even have to think. "Retaliate in the same way."
Grace was surprised because she had thought the same. In her angriest moments, she had considered it.
"But Patrick wouldn't care about that. He has no conscience," Grace replied, knowing it wouldn't punish Patrick.
"Then force him to swallow it," Xavier said coldly. He wasn't joking. If Patrick pushed him, he would actually follow through. While Patrick might not value the ancestral ashes, making him consume them would leave a lasting impact on his conscience.
Of course, Patrick wouldn't dare touch Xavier's mother. He knew he couldn't match Xavier and that any provocation would be met with ruthless retaliation.
Grace was silent.
"Xavier, isn't that a bit violent?" Grace was stunned by Xavier's brutal method.
It was indeed ruthless, and no wonder they were family. Their ways of threatening people were the same, but Xavier was clearly more ruthless, making Patrick eat them.
"Violent?" Xavier asked.
In this world, there were countless ruthless tactics. For the sake of profit or ambition, many disregarded morality entirely. Xavier, having seen too much, had long abandoned hope in this world.
His perspective shifted when Grace entered his life, piercing through the darkness and illuminating a path.
Xavier's gaze drifted to the night outside the window. "When dealing with people like that," he remarked, "you have to use their own methods against them."
