Chapter 604 So This Is the Real Cause of Mom's Death
Scott lunged forward, fists clenched, ready to throw a punch.
Using Chase's life as leverage was beyond infuriating, and Jared's smug attitude only made it worse.
Grace stepped in, "I'll talk to you."
She had suspected for a while that Jared wanted something from her. He had been targeting her for some time now.
Jared must have his agenda; otherwise, he would have acted against her already.
Now, she had the chance to uncover Jared's true intentions and see what he was really after.
"Grace, you can't be serious," Scott objected immediately.
Xavier and Steven stayed quiet, but Scott pressed on, "Xavier, you can't seriously be thinking about letting Grace talk to Jared alone. That's like sending a lamb to the slaughter!"
Xavier replied, "Talking alone is out of the question. I'll stay, or one of us will stay with her."
Jared thought for a moment. "Fine, you stay."
"I want to stay too!" Scott insisted.
With Xavier already staying, what difference would one more person make?
"We'll wait outside," Steven decided, leading Scott out of the room.
Though reluctant, Scott followed Steven out.
Soon, only a few of them remained in the room. Jared was tied up, so he couldn't do much.
"Now it's just the three of us. Tell me, what do you want in exchange for the antidote?" Grace sat across from Jared, keeping a safe distance.
Jared was known for his deceitful nature, so Grace was cautious about believing anything he said.
"It's simple. When your mother passed away, did she leave anything behind for you?"
As Grace had suspected, Jared was after something specific.
"My mother left me many things. I don't know what you're referring to," Grace replied.
Jared couldn't specify what it was. He didn't know how Elizabeth had left it behind—maybe on a USB drive or hidden in something else. It was hard to say.
"Bring out everything your mother left you. I'll find it myself. Once I have it, I'll give you the antidote."
"Why should I believe you? Do you think you have any credibility left?" Grace stared at him.
"And what exactly did you do to my mother? How did she die?" This was what Grace most wanted to know.
"What did I do? Isn't it obvious? I poisoned her, just like I did with Chase. A slow-acting poison, personally developed. Chase's dose was stronger and more potent, and given his age, he succumbed quickly. Otherwise, like Scott and the others, it would have taken a year or more to invade the bone marrow and slowly kill them."
Jared no longer bothered to hide the truth. They already knew Elizabeth's death was connected to him.
"You bastard!" Grace stood up, trembling with anger.
This drug had poisoned her mother, and she had never known how her mother died until now.
"Jared, what did my mother ever do to you to deserve such a fate?" Grace demanded, her voice shaking with anger.
"That's none of your concern," Jared dismissed her reaction with a wave of his hand. He knew Grace wouldn't kill him, not now.
Back then, he and Elizabeth had worked together on research. Elizabeth was a renowned scientist with brilliant ideas, creating something Jared desperately wanted.
But they had a falling out. Elizabeth believed their work could harm the world and insisted on destroying it, refusing to continue.
Jared suspected Elizabeth's change of heart was influenced by Dorian, whom she had met around that time.
Jared had poisoned Elizabeth to control and threaten her. His ambitions were vast, and he had been secretly involved in many shady activities. His public persona of righteousness was a facade.
Elizabeth had realized this and confronted him. She hadn't exposed him yet, but she was gathering evidence.
If Elizabeth hadn't gone into hiding, Jared would have found her. She had changed her name and appearance, making it impossible for Jared to track her down.
Grace now understood that her mother had fled because of Jared, fearing he would find her and take what he wanted.
Grace wasn't sure if her mother knew about the poisoning, but Jared's actions were unforgivable.
Grace clenched her fists, her eyes burning with hatred. She truly despised Jared.
If it weren't for Jared, her mother would still be alive!
But then, a thought struck Grace.
"Wait, this doesn't add up."
Her expression grew serious.
If her mother had known Jared was a bad person, how could she have had his child and raised her?
Grace hadn't spent much time with her mother, and her memories of her were fading, but she knew her mother loved her deeply.
As a child, her mother often gazed at her with a smile, though that smile held many unspoken emotions that young Grace couldn't understand.
She had thought her mother was happy to see her, but now Grace realized her mother might have been seeing someone else through her.
If her suspicions were correct, it couldn't have been Jared. Her mother wouldn't have smiled at the child of the man who had caused her so much pain.
There was only one possibility: she wasn't Jared's child.
Maybe she was Dorian's...
Grace had figured it out!
She sat back down, looking directly at Jared. "So you lied to me before, saying I was your child, just to get what you wanted from me?"
"Why would I lie to you, Grace? I am your father. You're my child. We're family. Your mother's belongings rightfully belong to me."
Grace had seen through his lies. She wouldn't be deceived by Jared anymore.
She spoke coldly, her expression icy but resolute.
"Stop pretending. I'm not your child. My father is Dorian Astor, isn't he?"
