Chapter 178 You Can't Escape
"You can have a try," said Xavier.
Grace fell silent, wondering, 'Try to tell Patrick, or try to bear his child?'
Xavier's gaze fell on Grace's belly, which looked so flat even as she sat.
Sensing Xavier's gaze, Grace had a good idea of what he was about to say.
She denied, "I'm not pregnant. I was just speaking off the cuff. Don't worry. I won't cling to you. I took contraceptives afterward, so you don't have to worry about that happening."
Grace knew her current situation well, so she was very careful. She couldn't bring a new life into this world when she didn't even know what her own future held. If the child stayed with her, it would surely suffer.
Moreover, Xavier certainly wouldn't want such a thing to happen. She wouldn't be an irresponsible mother.
As soon as Grace finished speaking, she felt the atmosphere in the car instantly turn icy.
Grace felt a chill down her spine; Xavier's face was tense and frightening.
Grace thought over her recent words, wondering if she had said something wrong.
Just as she was about to say something to ease the tension, she heard Xavier speak coldly. "At least you have some self-awareness."
Grace forced a smile, uttering, "Don't worry. I'm very low-maintenance."
No one spoke again, and the air seemed to fall into silence.
"Xavier, Iris is very important to me. Could you, considering the times I've made you happy, help me look after Iris? You don't need to do much, just let Patrick know that Iris is under the DG Group," Grace pleaded.
Xavier looked at Grace. Deep down, she was someone who wouldn't easily bow her head. It was very difficult for her to ask someone for help.
For Grace to say such words, it must have been very hard for her.
Grace wasn't asking Xavier to help her break off the engagement but just to use his influence to protect what she cared about most.
This stubborn Grace made Xavier feel a pang in his heart.
He looked away. "I told you, you don't need to make these futile struggles. The Montgomery family, you can't escape."
Sometimes, fate was simply unavoidable.
"I don't believe it!" She was determined to escape.
Xavier said nothing. Since she insisted, he wouldn't stop her. He was indeed curious to see how she would struggle.
"If you have time, go visit your mother." This was Xavier's final reminder.
Grace hadn't visited her mother in a long time. She nodded. "I will."
She had originally planned to see Evelyn before leaving. She really missed Evelyn and wished she could be by her side.
The car moved slowly, and Mason, who was driving, had long mastered the skill of hearing what he should and ignoring what he shouldn't.
"Anything else to say?" Xavier asked.
Grace shook her head. "No, just pull over here. I'll get off."
Mason glanced at Xavier. Without Xavier's order, he wouldn't stop the car.
Xavier nodded slightly, and Mason finally pulled over.
Grace stepped out of the car and walked alone along the road. She appeared so fragile and thin that it seemed a gust of wind could easily blow her away.
Although Xavier's car drove away, his gaze remained fixed on the rearview mirror.
"Mr. Montgomery, are we heading back to the Bameran villa or to the office?" Mason was unsure of Xavier's schedule.
Grace's gradually diminishing figure disappeared from his sight.
"Stop!" called out Xavier.
Mason's car pulled over again, this time to let Xavier out.
"Go about your business," Xavier said, leaving only that remark.
Mason asked if he should arrange another driver for Xavier, but Xavier declined.
Then Mason watched as Xavier turned and walked away, clearly heading in Grace's direction.
Grace walked slowly ahead, glancing at her phone and browsing online information.
The internet was abuzz with discussions about the scandal of Ryan. Although there had been some reversals, the unresolved engagement still weighed on Grace's mind.
At that moment, Angela called her, and Grace answered.
"Angela."
"Grace, are you okay?" Angela was very worried. "I just went to your house, and you weren't there."
She had seen Grace's live broadcast, which was excellent. It had exposed Ryan and Kelly's true colors.
But Angela was still afraid that Grace might be upset by what she saw, so she went to find Grace.
She also feared that Grace might act impulsively. As Grace's closest friend, she believed it was crucial to stand by Grace's side during this challenging time.
Angela had used the passcode to enter Grace's house, but to her surprise, Grace was nowhere to be found.
"I'm fine. I'm outside," replied Grace.
"What are you doing outside? Give me your location, and I'll come to you," Angela said, concerned.
Grace replied, "No need, Angela. I'm really fine. Such a small matter can't bring me down. Besides, hasn't the online opinion shifted? I just want to find a quiet place to think. Don't worry about me; I won't do anything rash."
"Alright, but call me if you need anything!"
"Okay," Grace agreed.
She continued walking. Nearby was a small park, and Grace sat there for a while.
The park was quite crowded. A child ran up to Grace and waved to someone behind. "Mommy, come here!"
Her mother walked over, her face beaming with happiness. "Sweetie, slow down.Be careful not to fall."
Seeing this scene, Grace was momentarily lost in thought, remembering her own childhood. When she ran ahead, Evelyn would follow behind her.
But Evelyn was no longer there.
She wanted to visit Evelyn.
Before that, Grace needed to find Zach.
She called Zach, but there was no answer.
Grace sat in the park for a little while longer, unaware that someone was watching her from a distance.
She hailed a cab and provided the driver with the Lewis family's address.
Zach wasn't at home, and the servants didn't know where he had gone. They mentioned that Zach hadn't been back for several days.
Taylor wasn't there either, and Madison no longer lived there.
What was once a bustling Lewis family was now fragmented.
The Lewis Group was now completely under Madison's control. Zach was buying up some scattered shares, but he wasn't yet able to compete with Madison, especially since Madison had powerful backing.
In the afternoon, Grace returned to her studio. She checked the online news and saw that the Montgomery family had already held a press conference. They admitted that Ryan was at fault and had punished him according to family discipline, even releasing photos of Ryan severely injured in the hospital.
Lying on the bed, Ryan publicly apologized to Grace, promising that such incidents would never happen again.
Patrick also stated that Grace and Ryan had been childhood sweethearts and that the Montgomery family was very satisfied with Grace. He added that if Grace married into the family, she would receive one percent of Montgomery Group's shares.
