Chapter 401 Grace's Miscarriage
Grace gave a nod, "Alright, it's a deal!"
"Cool, I'll tag along with you tomorrow," Angela said, scooting closer to Grace. "There are plenty of fish in the sea. We can always find someone new. I thought Steven was a catch—tall and handsome—but turns out you two are siblings. What a bummer!"
"If you think Steven's great, go for it. My brother's pretty easygoing," Grace teased, giving Angela a playful look.
"Looks like you're fitting right in with the Coleman family," Angela remarked.
"Steven's my family. I'm not wrong about that," Grace replied with a grin.
"Never mind, I heard Steven's got a fiancée," Angela said.
"How do you know that?" Grace was surprised. She'd have to check on that later.
Angela scratched her head, trying to remember. "I think that self-absorbed Scott mentioned it last time."
"I'll find out for you. But even if Steven's taken, there's still Thomas and Scott. You haven't met Thomas yet, but Scott's also tall, handsome, and funny. If you became my sister-in-law, that'd be awesome!" Grace said, smiling.
Angela made a face at the mention of Scott. "Scott? No way. He's not funny; he's just full of himself. He thinks every woman is into him. I've never met such a narcissist. Grace, you're seeing him through rose-colored glasses. But hey, we really are best friends, both hoping the other could become our sister-in-law."
Grace laughed, "I might not become your sister-in-law, but you could definitely become mine."
"Why not? Maybe one day you'll see how great Omari is," Angela suggested, thinking Omari was a good match, just not for Grace.
"Scott's not bad either. Give him a shot," Grace said.
Angela pretended to gag. "Let's drop it. Time to hit the sack. I'll go with you to the hospital tomorrow!"
"But Grace, are you sure you won't regret it?" Angela asked, propping her head up, worried about Grace's decision.
It was clear Grace hadn't moved on from Xavier.
"Well... I'm not really sure," Grace admitted, looking down.
Grace continued, "Forget it, let's not dwell on it. I won't regret it. When Xavier finds out, let him be the one to regret it!"
Maybe it was because she was so exhausted, but Grace fell asleep early and even had a dream.
In the dream, she was in a vast, white space, like she was floating in the clouds.
She wanted to figure out where she was and leave, but suddenly a little boy grabbed her clothes, begging her not to go, not to leave him.
The little boy seemed really upset, but Grace couldn't see his face clearly. She asked if he was lost and who he was looking for, offering to help him find them.
But the little boy stayed silent, just held her hand tightly. Grace walked with him for a long time until she saw a dark area ahead. She told the boy to wait there while she checked it out and promised to come back for him.
The little boy, in a sweet, childlike voice, said, "You promised you'd come back. You won't abandon me. Remember that!"
But when Grace returned, she couldn't find the little boy anywhere. She called out anxiously, searching, but there was no trace of him.
When Grace woke up again, it was Angela shaking her awake.
She jolted up, her forehead damp with cold sweat.
"Grace, what's up? What did you dream about? You scared the crap out of me. You were mumbling something, but I couldn't make it out," Angela said, concerned.
Grace looked at Angela, her eyes still hazy with confusion. "I… I had a dream."
"And? What was it about? A nightmare?" Angela asked.
Grace shook her head, trying to remember but coming up blank. The dream felt like a puzzle she couldn't piece together.
By then, Grace noticed it was already light outside. Time to get up.
"I don't really remember. Let's just get up," Grace said.
"Okay, what do you want for breakfast? I'll whip something up for you!" Angela offered.
Grace shrugged, "I'm not really hungry."
"You can't skip breakfast. Even if you're not hungry, think about the baby. You can't let the baby go hungry. Hang tight, I'll make something the baby will love!" Angela smiled and headed to the kitchen.
Grace thought to herself, whoever marries Angela in the future is going to be one lucky person.
Angela made breakfast, and Grace nibbled a bit before they headed to the hospital.
Angela went to find a parking spot while Grace went to make an appointment. A little boy in a hospital gown, bald, ran into her.
Before Grace could react, the little boy sweetly apologized, "Sorry, miss. Here, have some candy!"
He opened his hand, revealing two pieces of milk candy.
"Thank you, but I don't eat candy," Grace declined politely.
The little boy looked about five years old, and Grace could have been around his mother's age.
Just then, the boy's mother, a woman in her forties, came over. "I'm so sorry, my son Sam didn't bump into you, did he?"
Grace shook her head, "No, he's very cute."
The woman nodded, her eyes red, wiping away tears.
"Is he sick?" Grace asked, noticing how tired Sam's mother looked.
"We struggled with infertility for years," the woman explained. "Tried everything. We were about to give up when, at forty, we finally had him. We thought he was a miracle. But when he was three, he was diagnosed with a congenital disease. The treatments are expensive. We've spent all our savings, sold our house… It's still not enough. He doesn't have much time left, but he's so optimistic. He doesn't even know if he has a tomorrow," she said, her voice breaking.
Sam quickly hugged her, "Mom, why are you crying again? Are you hurt? I'll kiss it better!"
The woman comforted him, "Mommy's okay."
Maybe it was because she was pregnant, but Grace found the scene incredibly touching.
"Grace? What are you looking at?" Angela had parked and joined her. "Ready?"
Grace nodded, "Yeah."
Angela said, "Let's go up then. Grace, don't be scared. It will hurt, but it will be over quickly. I'll take good care of you this month."
Grace went to the OB-GYN, but she seemed distracted.
The check-up went quickly, and Grace's health indicators were fine. She was then taken into the operating room.
