Chapter 218 Too Close
Grace didn't take Victor's affection seriously; she saw it as friendly banter. She raised her glass to Victor a couple more times, choosing milk over alcohol.
She had a clean, comfortable vibe and was straightforward and smart. Victor liked being friends with her.
It was just a casual hangout, everyone chatting and drinking.
Victor sat next to Grace, even nudging Xavier aside.
"From now on, Grace, your problems are my problems. If you need anything, just call or message me anytime, and we can grab a drink!" Victor said, raising his glass to Grace.
Xavier, who had been pushed aside, squinted. Victor turned to him, smiling. "What's up, Xavier?"
"Aren't we drinking? I'll drink with you." Xavier said, pouring a drink.
There were many types of alcohol, and Xavier mixed a bit of everything into one glass. Mixing drinks could easily get someone drunk. Victor hesitated but took the glass Xavier handed him.
"Come on, drink!" Victor downed it in one gulp and exchanged a glance with Isaac.
They had agreed to get Xavier drunk tonight!
So the three of them started drinking. Victor was getting tipsy, one glass after another, but when he looked at Xavier, he was already drunk.
"When did he become such a lightweight?" Victor whispered to Isaac, letting out a drunken burp. "Remember the last time we drank together? He got both of us drunk by himself."
Was it the mixed drink? Victor was still somewhat sober, but Xavier was out.
Isaac said, "I don't think you're that sober either."
"Who says I'm not? I'm sober." Victor picked up his glass and raised it towards the empty doorway. "Let's keep drinking."
Xavier was now leaning against the sofa, rubbing his temples, looking uncomfortable.
Grace, next to him, handed over her milk. "Did you drink too fast? Milk can help. Want some?"
Xavier, holding his head with one hand, grabbed Grace's milk with the other and drank it straight from the glass.
Isaac was surprised. They knew Xavier was a clean freak and hated touching other people's stuff. Even Isaac or Victor's things might be rejected by Xavier.
But the milk Grace handed over was something she had just drunk from, and Xavier took it and drank it.
Isaac wondered, 'Were they too close? Could it be, as Victor said, that Xavier had special feelings for Grace?'
Isaac hadn't interacted much with Grace. While she had a relaxed vibe, he couldn't see what might have captivated Xavier.
Grace didn't know much about Xavier's drinking capacity, but he did seem uncomfortable.
Since Xavier initially showed reluctance to join but eventually came after Grace accepted Victor's invite, she stood up and said to Victor and Isaac, "Mr. Hastings, Mr. Whitman, it looks like Mr. Montgomery overdid it. He's been stressed and hasn't rested well. How about I take him back to relax, and we can meet up another time?"
"No problem, take good care of him tonight," Isaac said.
Grace helped Xavier up, and as he started to stumble, she quickly supported him, letting him lean on her shoulder.
Xavier's height made anyone next to him look small. Despite Isaac's concern that Xavier might overwhelm Grace, he wondered if Xavier's tolerance for alcohol was really that low.
Grace struggled to take Xavier away, and as they left, she said to Victor, "Mr. Hastings, we're heading out."
"Grace is leaving? No way, we still need to drink!" Victor, drunk, was pulled back by Isaac.
"With your drinking capacity, you want more? Grace, take Xavier back. I'll handle Victor," Isaac said.
Grace took Xavier and left, taking the elevator downstairs. Xavier's car was parked outside.
Meanwhile, some socialites from Skigeth were having a gathering at the bar. Wendy and Edith were there, along with other wealthy socialites.
The Montgomery family's recent online drama made things awkward for Wendy, so they avoided the topic and talked about other things. Jessica became the main subject.
"Have you noticed Jessica hasn't shown up for a while? What's up with her?"
"Who knows? She used to act like she was better than us. Just looking at her made me sick," a girl said, fiddling with her nails.
"I think I saw her visiting a psychologist recently. Who knows what's going on."
"It can't be anything good. If it were, she'd be here bragging. You know how she is."
"I've never liked Jessica. Maybe she's getting what she deserves."
Wendy, in a sour mood, quietly sipped her wine while Edith joined in the gossip about Jessica.
Despite Edith's past attempts to befriend Jessica, she had been met with indifference. This was common; when someone had influence, many sought their favor, but if things changed, they became the target of gossip.
At that moment, a socialite came in from outside. "Wendy, I think I just saw Grace outside with another man. Why don't you go check?"
Wendy jumped up. "Are you serious?"
"She just called off the engagement with your brother and is already seeing someone new. Did she find someone else before ending things with your brother? Just look at how your brother's reputation is taking a hit now; it's all because of Grace," the girl remarked.
Wendy couldn't stand hearing this. She already hated Grace. The once powerful Montgomery family had fallen because of Grace!
Patrick and Ryan had a huge falling out, and Ryan hadn't been home since.
Wendy stormed out, and the others in the room started gossiping about her.
"It's hard to talk in front of her. I don't know who invited her. She's as annoying as Jessica."
"I've never liked her. She's so phony. Her brother is disgusting; they're both awful."
