Chapter 207 The Shares Sent by Xavier Came in Handy
Grace quickly left the Montgomery Manor.
Angela was waiting outside and opened the car door. "Back so soon? What did Patrick say?"
"He's at the office. I didn't see him."
Grace had assumed Patrick would be home since it was the weekend.
"So, what's the plan now?"
"To the office!" Grace replied. She needed to sort this out today.
Angela drove Grace to the Montgomery Group in no time.
Even on the weekend, the office was bustling. Patrick had recently laid off several employees to cut costs, so the remaining staff had to pick up the slack without any pay raise. They were busier than ever but stuck around because finding a new job was tough. So, despite their frustrations, they were unwilling to risk unemployment.
Grace didn't have a work card to get in, so she approached the receptionist for help.
The receptionist, even on a weekend, looked annoyed when Grace mentioned she needed to see Patrick.
"Do you have an appointment?" she asked, clearly irritated.
Grace shook her head. "No."
"Sorry, no appointment, no entry. You think you can just waltz in to see Mr. Patrick Montgomery?" The receptionist scoffed, as if Grace's request was absurd. She knew many people wanted a meeting with Patrick.
"Why don't you call Mr. Patrick Montgomery or his secretary and tell him my name is—"
Before Grace could finish, the receptionist cut her off. "It doesn't matter what your name is. No appointment, no entry. Security, escort her out!"
Security showed up, ready to use force if needed.
"Miss, you better leave now, or we won't be so nice."
Grace glared at them. She didn't want to cause a scene but was determined to see Patrick.
"Ten percent of the shares make me a major shareholder, right? I can't even enter my own company?" Grace said.
The shares Xavier had sent were proving useful.
Grace's words stunned everyone.
"What shareholder?" The receptionist asked.
"It's my first time here, so it's normal you don't recognize me. But don't you keep up with company affairs? You don't know about the shareholder changes?"
They all looked confused. Grace wondered if even Patrick knew about this yet.
"If you don't know, make a call. If you touch me, don't expect to keep your jobs at the Montgomery Group!" Grace's commanding tone made everyone uneasy.
Though she looked young and average, she had a powerful presence.
The receptionist quickly called Patrick's secretary, Lester Dixon. He answered promptly, asking, "What shareholder? What's her name?"
The receptionist, now nervous, looked at Grace. "Miss, what's your name?"
"Grace Lewis."
The receptionist was shocked. Wasn't she Ryan's fiancée?
The Montgomery family's drama had been all over the internet recently, including a live broadcast about Ryan's mistress being pregnant.
Was Grace here to stir up trouble?
Patrick had joked online about giving her shares if she married into the Montgomery family, but she hadn't tied the knot yet. Technically, she wasn't a shareholder.
The receptionist, initially scared, now thought Grace was bluffing.
When Lester heard Grace's name, he dismissed the shareholder issue, thinking the receptionist had misunderstood.
"Oh, it's Ms. Lewis. Let her up," Lester said.
The receptionist, still in her unfriendly tone, said, "You can go up."
Grace's calm stare made the receptionist shiver.
"Have him come down to get me."
The receptionist was shocked by Grace's bold request. "Mr. Dixon is very busy. He doesn't have time to come down."
"Whether he is available is his business. Your job is to relay the message. If you don't want this position, just say so. I'll inform your supervisor, and maybe they'll find you a job you want to do."
Seeing Grace's serious expression, the receptionist quickly called Lester again.
Soon, Lester came down. "Ms. Lewis, this way, please."
Grace followed Lester into the elevator.
The Montgomery Group was the top company in Skigeth, and the building was impressive. Patrick's office was on the top floor, and it took a while to get there by elevator.
"Ms. Lewis, is there an urgent matter? The chairman is in a meeting," Lester said.
"He's been in a meeting all this time?" Grace asked.
Lester nodded. "Yes, even though it's the weekend, the chairman has called a shareholders' meeting."
"A shareholders' meeting? Perfect." Grace smiled. She had come at just the right time.
When the elevator doors opened, Lester led Grace out. "Ms. Lewis, please wait in the guest room. I'll inform you when the chairman's meeting is over."
"Where's the meeting room?" Grace asked directly.
Lester pointed. "Over there."
Grace started walking in that direction. Lester quickly tried to stop her. "Ms. Lewis, this is a shareholders' meeting. You can't just barge in."
"Why not? I'm a shareholder. Why can't I attend?"
Lester thought she was joking. "Ms. Lewis, although Patrick said he would give you some shares when you become Mr. Ryan Montgomery's wife, you're not a Montgomery Group shareholder yet. Only major shareholders can attend the shareholders' meeting."
Lester meant that even if Grace had a small number of shares, she couldn't attend the meeting.
Grace didn't stop walking. "Really? How many shares make a major shareholder? Is ten percent enough?"
"Of course, that's enough."
Ten percent was a lot. The largest shareholder was Patrick, and the second largest was Ryan, who only had ten percent. What was Grace thinking?
"Good, then lead the way."
Lester looked troubled. "Ms. Lewis, please don't joke with me."
"I'm not joking. Check if I'm a shareholder," Grace said.
The floor fell into an eerie hush as Grace made her way towards the meeting room, the muffled voices growing clearer with each step.
Catching Lester's incredulous gaze, she calmly strode towards the source of the conversation.
