Chapter 297 Your Mr. Montgomery
It had been ages since Grace last hung out with Angela. Finally wrapping up her work, Grace hit up Angela to set up dinner for the next night.
Angela was all in. She hadn't seen Grace in forever and had a ton to spill.
During the day, Grace swung by a few stores to check things out. Iris was killing it, packed with customers.
Everything seemed chill, but Grace had this nagging feeling that something was about to go sideways. She felt this weird emptiness inside.
Just as she bounced from the store, her phone buzzed. It was Xavier. "Mr. Montgomery?"
Xavier's voice came through, making Grace's heart do a little flip. "I gotta head back to Oakworth for something. Just giving you a heads-up."
Grace thought, 'Is this a check-in or what?'
She had no clue why Xavier was heading back. Probably some work stuff. The DG Group was massive, and he couldn't handle everything from Skigeth.
Grace said, "Cool, if you need anything, just holler!"
Xavier replied, "Got it. Make sure you eat and sleep well."
Grace shot back, "That should be my line. You're the one who needs to take care of yourself. If you end up in the hospital again, I'm not visiting. Also, I'm always online if you wanna call or text."
"Okay," Xavier's cool voice echoed.
They both stayed on the line, just listening to each other breathe.
"Grace, over here!" Angela waved from a distance.
Grace finally said, "I'm having dinner with Angela tonight, so I'll hang up now. Let me know when you get there."
Xavier replied, "Okay."
Grace hung up and walked over to Angela.
Angela asked, "Who was that? Your Mr. Montgomery?"
Grace said, "He had to go back to Oakworth."
"This time you didn't deny it. Is Xavier really your boyfriend now?" Angela asked, all curious.
Grace said, "I'm not sure, maybe?"
"What do you mean? Spill the tea! I need all the deets!" Angela said, linking arms with Grace.
Grace gave her a quick rundown of her situation with Xavier. Angela covered her mouth, super excited. "Oh my God!"
"What?" Grace asked.
Angela shook her head. "Nothing, it's just juicier than a TV show. So Ryan really thinks of you as his Aunt?"
Grace said, "No, but his face at the time made me really happy."
"That's so satisfying! I can totally picture Ryan's face. He must be kicking himself. He was always searching for the real you, only to find out it was the person he despised the most. And now, you're the one he can't have." Angela felt a sense of justice just thinking about it.
"But that Kelly is a real piece of work. She messed Ryan up so bad that even the Montgomery family can't handle her. Is she using her kid to lock down her spot?" Angela had always hated Kelly but didn't expect her to be so sneaky.
Grace didn't mention anything about Kelly's kid; she just recounted how Kelly forced Ryan to marry her.
The Montgomery family was still gearing up for the wedding which was just a couple of days away, now that Ryan and Kelly's marriage had been officially announced.
By pulling this stunt, the Montgomery family might actually boost their rep and dodge a ton of online hate. After all, Ryan and Kelly being together was the best PR move.
Grace said, "I don't know. Maybe Kelly's karma hasn't hit her yet."
Kelly seemed all sweet and innocent but was actually a snake.
"What about your mom's ashes? Aren't they still with Patrick?" Angela asked, worried.
Grace said, "I'll get them back."
Angela nodded, knowing that if Grace said she would, she definitely would.
The two headed upstairs together. Grace thought of Omari and asked, "How's Omari doing?"
Angela said, "Omari's good; he's already out of the hospital. Somehow Edith found out and got all mad and jealous, thinking Omari told me but not her, missing her chance to play nurse. Edith then badmouthed me to my mom, who then chewed me out."
Angela tried to play it off, but Edith had totally taken her spot.
In her mom's eyes, Edith was the golden child. Angela was just... there.
"She didn't do anything to you, did she?" Grace asked, worried. She knew Angela's mom treated her like crap.
Angela shook her head. "Nah, just some yelling. Omari said some nice things, and it blew over."
"Grace, how about we hit up that buffet?" Angela suggested, spotting a nearby restaurant.
"Sure, let's go!" They headed in.
While chowing down, Angela checked her phone and gasped, "Grace, look! Ryan and Kelly's wedding pics are out. Ryan looks like he's at a funeral!"
Grace glanced at the photos.
She thought, 'These must be fresh.'
The internet was buzzing with news about Ryan marrying Kelly. The Montgomery family had hired media to hype it up, and all the marketing accounts were saying Ryan and Kelly were a perfect match.
But in the photos, Ryan and Kelly's faces told a different story. Kelly was all smiles, while Ryan looked like he was at a wake.
Kelly looked over the moon leaning against Ryan, but Ryan's face was pure disgust and disdain. He didn't even want to touch her.
The shared posts were all congratulatory, saying how perfect they were, all pre-arranged PR.
But the real comments from people were way harsher.
However, those comments were getting wiped by the Montgomery family's PR team.
Grace didn't care if Kelly and Ryan got hitched. She just wanted to know when Kelly would hand over her mom's ashes.
Grace shot Kelly a message to remind her: [It's been a week.]
Kelly felt a jolt of anxiety when she saw Grace's message: [Don't worry. I'll get them soon.]
Kelly thought, 'As long as Grace is around, the secret could blow up. She's like a ticking time bomb.'
"Grace, did you get an invite?" Angela asked.
Grace asked, "What invite?"
Angela replied, "To Ryan and Kelly's wedding. The Turner family got one. Should we go and watch the drama? I bet it'll be a riot."
Grace said, "I didn't get one, but Xavier probably did."
It wouldn't be hard for Grace to crash the wedding, but Xavier had gone back to Oakworth. He probably wouldn't make it to Ryan's big day.
