Chapter 376 What Exactly Does Patrick Want to Do?
Grace showed up at the airport and, to her surprise, bumped into Steven and Scott.
"Hey, Steven, Scott! You guys heading back?" she asked, walking over to them.
"Yeah," Steven said, "Grandpa took a turn for the worse."
Grace's heart skipped a beat. "Oh no, is it serious?"
"He's stabilized for now," Steven explained, "but he's gotta stay in the hospital a few more days."
"Hope he gets better soon," Grace said, genuinely concerned.
Steven nodded, then asked, "You headed somewhere?"
"I've got some business in Oakworth. My flight's boarding, so I gotta run." She waved goodbye and headed to the domestic departures area.
Steven and Scott's flight wasn't boarding yet, so they had some time to kill.
"This might be our last trip to Skigeth," Steven mused.
"Let's go," Steven said, and they started walking.
Unbeknownst to them, a woman nearby, wearing sunglasses, watched them with a smirk.
As they walked, a woman engrossed in her phone, dragging a suitcase, bumped into them, sending her phone and sunglasses tumbling.
She quickly bent down to pick them up, "Sorry about that."
When she looked up, Steven frowned slightly, and Scott gasped, "You..."
The woman, Wendy, apologized again, "Sorry, are you guys okay?"
Steven and Scott couldn't help but notice how much Wendy's eyes resembled Elizabeth's.
"What's your name?" Scott asked, eyes wide.
"Wendy Montgomery. Why?" Wendy played dumb, though she had seen them from a distance. This whole encounter was set up by Patrick.
Patrick had instructed her to wait at the airport and create a "chance" meeting with Steven and Scott.
"Wendy? Who's your mom?" Scott pressed on.
Just a quick glance, but they felt Wendy's eyes looked a lot like Elizabeth's, or maybe even Grace's.
The same beautiful eyes, though Wendy's lacked Grace's sparkle.
"What?" Wendy acted confused, like she had no idea what they were talking about.
"Can you take off your sunglasses?" Scott asked again.
Looking scared, Wendy grabbed her suitcase and hurried off, "Sorry."
"Wait! That's rude!" Scott called after her, but she was already gone.
Steven watched her leave and made a call, "Run a background check on a Wendy Montgomery in Skigeth."
Soon, Wendy's info popped up on Steven's phone. The data was sparse, and the photos were either few or super blurry.
"Why are all the photos like this?" Scott asked.
The person on the other end replied, "Not sure, seems like someone messed with them on purpose. This is all we could find."
Steven looked at Wendy's parents. Her dad was Patrick.
From the data, everything seemed legit, and Wendy's age aligned with when Elizabeth could have given birth.
Back when Elizabeth had a prenatal checkup, the doctor had said it was a girl.
"Steven, do you think this Wendy might be related to Aunt?" Scott asked, clinging to even the smallest hope.
Steven replied, "I don't know. But let's not head back just yet. Let's check out the Montgomery Group."
At the Montgomery Group, in the chairman's office:
Patrick stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, coffee cup in hand, surveying the city below from his top-floor office. The buildings seemed tiny from up there.
Wendy was also in the office. After leaving the airport, she had come straight here to report to Patrick.
"Good job," Patrick said.
"But Dad, why all this? What's so special about those two?" Wendy asked, puzzled.
Patrick didn't answer her. They just waited in silence.
Steven had everything planned out. He never expected someone as seemingly ordinary as Grace to have such a significant background. Unfortunately, Grace would never know about this.
Soon, the secretary knocked on the door.
"Come in," Patrick said.
"Mr. Montgomery, there are two gentlemen named Coleman here to see you. They don't have an appointment," the secretary announced.
"Let them in," Patrick said, smirking and sipping his coffee.
Wendy still didn't get it. She always felt like Patrick was executing some grand plan, but she couldn't see through it.
Steven and Scott soon arrived at Patrick's office.
"Mr. Montgomery," they greeted.
Patrick had already switched to a more welcoming demeanor. Wendy, following the script, said, "Oh, it's you guys? Are you hurt? You're not here to cause trouble, are you?"
"Wendy, what's going on?" Patrick's tone turned serious.
"No, we're here to see Mr. Montgomery about something else," Steven said.
"That's good. Dad, since you have guests, I'll head home," Wendy remarked.
Patrick added, "Wait, at your age, others are already helping their fathers with the business, but you're still gallivanting around. Go to your brother and let him assign you some tasks. I'm getting old and should hand over the company to you two."
"I don't want to work. I want to be Daddy's little girl forever!" Wendy said, hugging Patrick.
This was something Wendy never dared to do before, but now, Patrick required her to do it.
"There are guests here. What are you doing?" Patrick scolded, but his tone was full of affection.
Wendy put her sunglasses back on, "I'll go find my brother then."
"Sorry for the scene. My daughter is spoiled by me. What brings you here?" Patrick began pouring coffee for them. "I just made this, please."
"Mr. Montgomery, we ran into your daughter at the airport and felt she looked a lot like someone we know. Could you tell us who her mother is?" Steven asked directly.
With Chase's condition worsening, Steven didn't want to miss any possibilities.
Patrick's eyes widened, and the coffee overflowed from the cup.
"Mr. Montgomery?" Steven called out.
Patrick snapped back to reality, his eyes seemingly flustered. He put down the coffee pot.
"Are you looking for someone?" Patrick inquired.
Steven pressed his lips together, "Sort of."
"Could it be such a coincidence?" Patrick murmured.
Steven frowned, "What's the matter? Mr. Montgomery, go ahead."
