Chapter 318 Intentionally Arousing Grace's Curiosity

"What’s up?" Patrick shot a look at Grace standing in front of him.

He’d always underestimated her. Grace had some serious moves, stirring up a crazy breakup and now teaming up with Xavier.

Xavier hated the Montgomery family, and Grace didn’t want to marry Ryan, so it made sense they’d join forces.

Grace said, "I’ve got ten percent of the Montgomery Group’s shares. I’m thinking of selling them. Given my almost-relationship with Ryan, I’m giving you first dibs. If Mr. Montgomery isn’t interested, I’ll find another buyer."

These shares were Montgomery family property, and Grace didn’t care for them. While they still had value, she wanted to cash out.

She had a gut feeling the Montgomery family, bleeding money, wouldn’t last much longer. Holding onto the shares would just make them worth less, so she figured it was smarter to sell now.

She never wanted the Montgomery shares. She wanted to use them to break off her engagement with Ryan and get her freedom. But since Patrick forced her hand, she had no reason to go easy on the Montgomery family.

So many shares meant a lot of cash. Why shouldn’t she take it?

Patrick’s eyes darkened, a sly look crossing his face. "Those shares were originally Montgomery property. You’re just giving them back."

Grace shot back, "These shares don’t have the Montgomery name on them now, so how could they belong to the Montgomery family?"

Patrick stared at Grace. When did she get so gutsy? Did she think Xavier had her back?

Patrick asked, "Don’t you want your mom’s ashes?"

Grace stayed cool, "That’s none of your business, Mr. Montgomery. What you need to decide is if you still want this ten percent of the shares. If not, I’ll find someone else."

Patrick still wanted to use Evelyn’s ashes to threaten her.

Of course, Patrick wanted the shares, but he didn’t want to pay for them. Ten percent of the Montgomery Group’s shares was no small amount, plus, he was already strapped for cash. Giving this sum to Grace would be more painful than anything.

Patrick asked, "Grace, are you threatening me?"

Grace stayed composed. "We’re doing business. How could it be a threat? You’re the one using my mom’s ashes to threaten me."

Patrick swallowed his anger. Grace was still young.

He’d been in the business world for years and knew people well. As a strong player, he needed to keep the upper hand. Clearly, Grace had the upper hand now, leading the conversation. He needed to show Grace she was still too green.

Patrick calmed down. "Grace, do you think Xavier really cares about you?"

Grace said, "That’s not the point right now."

Patrick asked, "Aren’t you curious why, despite you being a nobody, I wanted you to marry Ryan and join the Montgomery family?"

This had always intrigued Grace, but now that Patrick brought it up, she found she didn’t care anymore.

Grace said, "I don’t want to know. It’s all in the past, right? What does it matter if I’m curious or not? I’m not Ryan’s wife now."

Patrick had planned to use Grace’s curiosity against her, expecting her to ask why. But Grace didn’t. Instead, she said she didn’t want to know.

Patrick's words got stuck in his throat when he saw Grace's lack of interest.

"Aren't you curious why Xavier's with you? You don't actually think he likes you, do you?" Patrick tried another angle.

"I don't care." Grace didn't get why Patrick was saying this stuff, but it was clearly an attempt to stir the pot.

Grace said, "Mr. Montgomery, you probably don't get young people. Nowadays, we live in the moment."

Patrick didn't expect Grace to be so chill. He didn't wait for her to get curious and just started talking.

Patrick said, "Xavier is cold and ruthless. I know him better than you. He's a cold-blooded guy who retaliates. If he's like that with the Montgomery family, imagine how he is with you. There's something between you two..."

Patrick suddenly stopped, like he realized he said too much.

"What do you mean, what's there?" Grace's eyebrows furrowed slightly. It was clear Patrick was doing this on purpose, leaving his sentence hanging.

She wasn't interested in what Patrick had said before, but this sentence got her curious.

Something? Blood relation? Could she and Xavier be siblings? That couldn't be possible, right?

Patrick said, "Nothing, Grace. Let me be clear. I had a reason for wanting you in the Montgomery family. You have something I want. I might as well tell you, Xavier and I have the same goal. We both want that thing. You can ask Xavier, but I bet he won't admit it and will say he doesn't know. But his acting is better than mine. Didn't he fool you with his deep affection?"

"What do I have?" Grace really didn't know what she had that would interest someone like Patrick. Could it be related to Evelyn?

Evelyn had been gone for years, but Grace always felt she had many secrets. For example, despite being so beautiful, Evelyn always dressed plainly and made Grace promise not to tell anyone.

And Evelyn seemed unhappy, often crying alone at night. When Evelyn saw her, it seemed like she had something to say but never did.

As a kid, Grace didn't get these things but would give Evelyn a hug, thinking it was just adult troubles.

After Evelyn left, when Zach brought his mistress and illegitimate child home, Grace realized Evelyn's unhappiness might have been due to Zach's betrayal.

But Grace never thought she had anything worth Patrick's attention. The Montgomery family was already the top family in Skigeth. If she had something valuable, why didn't Zach take it?

Patrick said, "If you want to know, you can trade the shares for the info. Transfer the shares to me, and I'll spill everything."

"Then I don't want to know. What if you make up some reason to deceive me? Where would I verify it? Besides, these old matters are less valuable than the shares." Grace acted very indifferent.

Did Patrick think she was stupid? Some things were more trouble the more you knew. She had always been someone who feared trouble and just wanted a peaceful life, so it was better not to know.

Patrick said, "Grace, I'm telling the truth. There's too much between you and Xavier. He can't truly care for you. He's just using you. To get where he is today, you should know he's ruthless. Do you still think he loves you?"
