Chapter 347 I Want to Give You the Best in the World

Grace tried to yank her hand back, but Xavier had a death grip on it.

"Let go, I need to make some coffee," Grace said, trying to bolt, but Xavier yanked her back hard.

Xavier was chilling in a chair, and with the tight space, Grace ended up plopping right onto his lap.

They were so close she could catch a whiff of his cedar cologne.

"Coffee now? You'll be up all night. If you're tired, just crash. You can tackle the work tomorrow," Xavier murmured.

"No way, my work's super important. This is Iris's big debut in Oakworth, and this collab is a game-changer. The partner's tough, but nailing this will open international doors for Iris. It's our first step to going global, and I gotta show I'm serious," Grace insisted, her tone full of determination.

The proposal had been tweaked a million times, and the other side still wasn't happy. Grace had revised it twice, but they still felt something was off.

Grace was all in on this project. She'd heard Madison was gunning for it too, and she had Daniel backing her. If they didn't come up with a killer proposal, Madison might snag it.

"If this project is such a big deal and you're wiped out, you won't come up with anything good. Why not get some rest and maybe you'll have a lightbulb moment in the morning," Xavier suggested.

"But I can't sleep. I need that coffee," Grace said.

She thought about getting up, but Xavier's arm tightened around her waist.

"What's so great about coffee?" Xavier asked.

"It just tastes good, and I need it to stay awake and finish this proposal. Might be an all-nighter," Grace replied.

"I just had some," Xavier said.

"And?" Grace asked.

"So, it's like you had some too."

Xavier kissed her, his lips and tongue tasting bitter from the black coffee he drank, which Grace didn't like. Now she knew how bitter it was.

Xavier's kissing game had seriously leveled up. Under his touch, Grace melted into bliss, barely noticing when her arms wrapped around his neck.

Sitting on Xavier's lap, she soon felt his reaction.

They hadn't been intimate in ages, and for Xavier, being with Grace was like an addict getting his fix.

Grace was also dizzy from Xavier's charm. It wasn't until he stood up with her in his arms, her whole body hanging in his embrace, that she snapped back to reality.

"Enough. I still have work to do."

But Xavier said, "It's time to rest."

"No," Grace protested, kicking her legs, trying to get down.

"Don't move!" Xavier suddenly commanded.

When she kicked, her legs accidentally brushed a sensitive spot on Xavier, making things even more intense.

Without even making it to the bedroom, Xavier stopped, swept the documents off the desk with one hand, and placed Grace on the table.

Grace was about to get down, but Xavier's hands stopped her.

His hands were on the table, trapping Grace in his embrace.

"I need to..." Grace started, but Xavier cut her off with a kiss.

"Is work more important than me? How long have you been ignoring me for work?" Xavier's voice was fierce against her lips.

Grace was quiet, thinking, "Is Xavier seriously jealous of my work?"

"Of course you're more important. I'm busting my butt for you."

"You don't need to work so hard."

"But I wanna give you the best of everything. I wanna buy you stuff without even looking at the price tag, just like you do for me."

Grace's voice was soft, but it hit Xavier right in the feels.

Wanting to give him the best—besides his family, only Grace thought like that.

When he was a kid, his mom always saved the best for him. It wasn't the best in the world, but it was the best she could manage.

Now, Grace was busting her butt to give him the best.

He didn't need anything more; her intentions were enough.

Grace went on, "I know I don't have the status or background. Standing next to you, people think I'm not good enough. So I wanna work hard to keep up, to be in sync with you. When people mention Grace, I want it to be for more than just being with you."

Being with someone you love means pushing yourself to be better. She could ignore what others thought, but she felt Xavier was just too amazing. Right now, she wasn't on his level.

"I..." Grace didn't finish before Xavier kissed her again, more urgently this time.

Xavier wasn't gentle anymore; it was like he wanted to consume her.

Grace had planned to convince Xavier to let her go, but somehow she got into it.

From the study to the bedroom to the bathroom, Xavier was on fire tonight. Maybe guys his age are just full of energy. In her daze, Grace heard Xavier's deep, magnetic voice in her ear: "You don't need to prove anything. I already have the best in the world."

With that, Xavier held Grace tightly.

Grace's ears turned red. Did Xavier mean she was the best in the world?

Grace had planned to pull an all-nighter on the project proposal, but she was so wiped out she fell asleep.

While they were on the desk in the study, her phone buzzed, like someone had sent her a message, but Grace didn't have time to check.

When Grace woke up, it was already the next day.

Summer was over, and the days were getting shorter.

Grace checked the time; it was just past six, and the sky was just starting to lighten. Xavier was lying next to her, seemingly asleep.

Grace quietly got out of bed without waking Xavier.

It was still early, and she had time to finish the project proposal and send it to the partner.

But after last night, Grace's legs were sore. Since arriving in Oakworth, Grace had been on birth control, but once Xavier found out, he just took precautions himself.

The only time she slipped up was when she first got to Oakworth and stayed at the hotel. She was so busy the next two days, and by the time she remembered, almost three days had passed.

Grace wasn't sure if it would still work, but she hadn't felt any different. With just one slip-up, she figured she was fine.

She couldn't get pregnant now; she wasn't ready to be a mom. Even though she and Xavier were together, they were both super busy.

Besides, what if Xavier didn't even like kids?
