Chapter 175 Ryan Got Beaten
In the Montgomery family, Ryan knelt on the ground as Patrick struck his back with a stick.
"You scoundrel, you worthless fool! What else can you do besides cause trouble?" Patrick's stick landed forcefully on Ryan's body with each blow.
"You can't even manage the company properly, and now you've been plotted by a woman!" Patrick scolded.
Ryan bit his lip hard, not making a sound, though beads of sweat dripped from his forehead, and his face turned pale from the pain.
"Ryan, own up to your mistake and apologize to your father."
Amy, standing nearby, was heartbroken and tried to pull Patrick away. "Patrick, what exactly did Ryan do wrong to make you so angry?"
"Get out of the way!" Patrick, in his rage, pushed Amy aside.
Wendy hurriedly supported Amy. "Dad, how can you push Mom?"
Amy, now ignoring her own pain, her eyes red, said, "Are you trying to beat Ryan to death? He did nothing but sleep with a woman. He didn't even get her pregnant. What's the big deal?"
"It's all that Grace's fault, being so pretentious. Nowadays, which man doesn't have a mistress? She even broadcasted it live, completely scheming against Ryan. Ryan is so naive; how could he know Grace was so malicious?" Amy added.
"A woman like that isn't fit to marry into the Montgomery family. If she does, will we ever have peace? Ryan will be tormented by her every single day!"
"Shut up!" Patrick roared in anger.
"It's all because you spoiled him. Look at him now. I told him long ago to end up with that Kelly. I even locked her up, and you let her out!"
As he spoke, Patrick's stick struck Ryan's back again even harder. "Don't you know? She will ruin you!"
"What?" Ryan looked up at Patrick.
Kelly wasn't released by him.
At that time, Ryan had almost forgotten about Kelly. Even when his subordinates informed him of Kelly's whereabouts, he didn't take any action.
Later, Kelly returned, and he didn't ask for details.
"This time, she schemed against you again. Do you think she really loves you? She's only after your status and money!" Patrick scolded.
Ryan said, "She's not like that. She loves me sincerely!"
"Dad, you're always so harsh. It feels like you only care about the company and pushing me to marry Grace. Do you even know what I truly want? Only Kelly truly gets me. She's the one who's been there for me. I have no desire to marry Grace whatsoever!"
Ryan finally erupted, though his mindset had changed recently. Initially, he was unwilling to marry Grace.
"You're insane!" Patrick was furious.
He knew Grace didn't want to marry into the Montgomery family.
He had worked hard to arrange the marriage between the Montgomery family and the Lewis family, leaving Grace no chance to back out. Now, Ryan had ruined everything.
Grace was now publicly declaring that the Montgomery family had wronged her. The people online were also cursing the Montgomery family.
Because of this, the Montgomery family's stock prices had started to fluctuate, and Patrick found it hard to hold his head high.
Playing around with women wasn't a big deal, but now everyone knew about it. The entire world knew about the Montgomery family's scandal.
Grace had irrefutable evidence, and now she was the victim. Patrick couldn't even find a reason for public relations!
Patrick said, "I've already arranged for the media to come. You will publicly apologize to Grace. You must be sincere. Say you were drunk and that Kelly deliberately set you up. Promise that you will never do it again."
"No, I won't!" Ryan refused. "Why should I apologize? I didn't do anything wrong."
After all, he was the eldest son of the Montgomery family. What was wrong with having a mistress?
Seeing Ryan's obstinate attitude, Patrick was so angry that he nearly had a heart attack.
"You must apologize!"
He swung the stick down forcefully, hitting Ryan so hard that the stick broke. Ryan, who had been kneeling, collapsed to the ground, almost spitting blood.
"Patrick!" Amy burst out. "How could you treat your own son this way? He's your one and only son!"
Amy rushed to hold Ryan. "Ryan, are you okay? Where's the doctor? Where's the family doctor?"
At that moment, a servant hurried in. "Mr. Patrick Montgomery, Mrs. Amy Montgomery,, Ms. Lewis is here."
"Show her in." Patrick gave Ryan a warning look. "If Grace mentions breaking off the engagement, you better act pitiful. You must keep Grace!"
Amy's eyes were filled with disdain at the mention of Grace's name. "That Grace dares to come here. She hasn't even married in yet, and she's already causing chaos in our family. If she marries in, it'll be even worse! Ryan, my poor child!"
Grace followed the servant in and immediately saw Ryan kneeling on the ground and the broken stick.
"Mr. Patrick Montgomery, Mrs. Amy Montgomery, hello," Grace said politely as she entered. "I'm sorry to disturb you, but after much thought, I still want to speak with you seriously."
"Grace, you're a good child. We all know about this matter. Ryan was in the wrong; he wronged you. I've already given him a severe lesson. Rest assured, I will give you an explanation," Patrick said, exuding the authority of the head of the family.
"Mr. Patrick Montgomery, I still feel that Ryan and I are not suitable for each other. Ryan doesn't like me. I think he should seek his own happiness. I can't stand in the way of him finding true love, and I'm not someone who can be a good wife and mother," said Grace.
"As Mrs. Amy Montgomery said, I haven't even married in yet, and I've already caused chaos in the Montgomery family. If I marry in, I won't be able to be a good wife, and it might hurt more people," she added.
"Please reconsider our engagement. I am willing to take a step back and publicly declare that the Montgomery family does not approve of me, or you can set any conditions you wish."
Amy's face stiffened. She hadn't expected her words to be overheard by Grace, but so what? She had only spoken the truth.
"Grace, I know you're angry right now, and you're speaking out of anger. However, marriage is a serious commitment. You and Ryan are still in the process of getting to know each other. Amy and I went through similar phases. Couples do have disagreements, but they work through quarrels," Patrick said with a gentle smile, radiating kindness.
"But breaking off the engagement is absolutely impossible. This marriage was arranged when you and Ryan were children. Your mother entrusted us with the responsibility to look after you. If we were to cancel the engagement now, it would tarnish the Montgomery family's reputation, and we wouldn't be able to face your mother in heaven," Patrick persuaded.
