Chapter 199 Annoying Omari
"She's an adult, not a kid. If she's sick, she knows to go to the hospital," Xavier said bluntly.
Mason countered, "Not always. When people are sick, they're vulnerable. Ms. Lewis is alone with no one to care for her. Who knows if she's even eaten today?"
After a pause, Mason added, "Wait, Ms. Lewis has a good friend, Ms. Turner. But she's probably busy. If she can't help, she might ask someone else."
"When people are sick, they tend to rely on others. If someone could show Ms. Lewis some care right now, she'd definitely be really touched," Mason hinted, making Xavier's eyes narrow.
"What does this have to do with me? Are you that free? Finished all your work?" Xavier asked.
Mason quickly grabbed the files and said, "I'll get right on it."
Xavier was left alone in the office, staring at his cluttered desk and overflowing computer screen. Even at Skigeth, his workload hadn't lessened; he was swamped.
Despite the workload, Xavier's mind wandered. Mason had a point. If Grace got sick, opportunists like Omari would be quick to pounce on any chance to gain an upper hand.
Given Angela's close friendship with Grace, she probably knew about Grace's condition. If Omari found out, who knows what he'd do?
'Grace is part of the Montgomery family. I can't let other men get close to her,' Xavier thought as he pressed the button on his desk phone.
The secretary answered quickly, "Mr. Montgomery."
"What's my schedule for today?"
The secretary listed his appointments.
"Cancel them all," Xavier said.
"But Mr. Montgomery..."
Xavier hung up before she could finish.
He checked the time—3 P.M. 'Leaving early once in a while isn't a big deal,' he thought, grabbing his car keys and heading out.
Grace, feeling thirsty, got up for a glass of water. The medication made her drowsy, and she was about to fall asleep again when Angela called.
"Angela?"
"Grace, got plans tonight? Omari invited me to dinner. Want to join?" Omari was right next to Angela.
Omari had suggested dinner and asked Angela if Grace should come along.
Angela had last seen Grace in good health. Although they had kept in touch, Angela was unaware of Grace’s illness, as she hadn’t seen her since then.
"No, you two have fun," Grace said.
"Are you planning to work late again? I can pick you up after work," Angela offered, glancing at Omari. She knew Omari had no chance but thought dinner as friends was fine.
Grace didn't want Angela to make a wasted trip. "No need. I think I have a cold. Don't want to pass it to you."
"You have a cold? Is it serious? Seen a doctor?" Angela asked, concerned.
"Don't worry, Angela. It's not serious. I saw a doctor, got an IV, and took some meds. I'll be fine by tomorrow. No need to come over. I'm really okay," Grace reassured her.
"Really?" Angela was still concerned but had an important meeting that afternoon.
"Yes."
"Alright, I'll check on you tomorrow," Angela said.
"Okay," Grace agreed.
After hanging up, Omari asked, "Grace isn't feeling well?"
"Yeah, she has a cold," Angela nodded.
Omari pressed, "Aren't you going to take care of her?"
"It doesn't seem serious. She sounded fine."
"But she's alone. What if she's really sick?" Omari insisted.
"Omari, you're overreacting. Don't get so worked up."
Realizing he was being too intense, Omari cleared his throat and said, "I just think you should check on her, but I know you're busy."
After a pause, he added, "So, I'll go check on Grace for you."
"Omari, Grace is fine. Maybe someone is looking after her," Angela said, thinking Xavier might be with Grace. But she hadn't heard anything, so maybe he wasn't there.
"What do you mean?"
"Nothing," Angela said, remembering her promise to Grace.
Under Omari's suspicious gaze, Angela added, "I mean, Grace has an assistant. Maybe her assistant is taking care of her. Omari, you're more worried about Grace than me, your sister. Are we still having dinner?"
Omari replied, "Aren't you busy? Let's do it another time, after Grace gets better."
Angela was silent. She knew Omari's invitation wasn't just about dinner.
"Omari, I think Grace has her own life. Maybe she's happy with it. And she has an engagement with the Montgomery family, you know that, right?" Angela wanted to remind Omari but didn't know how.
Omari hadn't said it outright, but from her observations, it wasn’t hard to tell.
Omari had always been good to her and Grace. She used to think he saw Grace as a sister, but later she realized he was too concerned about her.
No wonder Omari always asked her to invite Grace to dinner, even though Grace rarely joined them.
"She doesn't want to marry into the Montgomery family," Omari said suddenly.
"How do you know? She just doesn't want to marry Ryan," Angela whispered.
Even though it was the same Montgomery family, there was more than just Ryan in the family.
Omari said, "You should get back to work. I won't bother you. We'll have dinner another time."
Xavier stood outside Grace's door with some food in his hands. Last time he visited, Grace had cooked a great meal for him. Now, it was his turn to repay her.
He knocked on the door, but there was no response.
Xavier took out his phone and called Grace. The call went through, but no one answered.
Xavier furrowed his brow, worried. Why wasn't Grace responding? Could she be so unwell that she fainted?
It wasn't impossible. Grace, being petite, might be more affected by the illness.
But could Grace really not take care of herself? If she was feeling unwell, why hadn't she reached out for help? What if something serious had happened?
Thankfully, Xavier had arrived just in time. If Grace had spiked a high fever, nobody would've had a clue.
Xavier dialed another number, and it was promptly answered. His voice tinged with urgency, he asked, "Is this the locksmith?"
