Chapter 221 A Car Accident
Grace wondered, 'Could the beautiful woman Ryan mentioned be me?'
She sped up, with Ryan trailing behind. "Grace, don't kid yourself. I'm your best option. I've got everything you need. You can't compete with me. Consider yourself lucky," he boasted.
"Ryan, if you're not feeling well, see a doctor. If it's mental, get help. Don't skip your meds," Grace snapped, clearly fed up.
"And by the way, you're not good enough for me. I have zero feelings for you. You need a reality check. I've never liked you. Don't flatter yourself! This engagement was a mistake, and I'm fixing it. I hope you and Kelly have a long, happy life," she added.
Ryan was mad at first but then laughed. "Grace, you say you don't care, but you're jealous, aren't you?"
Grace was baffled. How did he twist her words into jealousy?
Ryan continued, "You're upset about me and Kelly, right? You're mad because I got her pregnant, so you're lashing out."
"I didn't even know Kelly was pregnant. I've always used protection. Don't worry, I'll make sure she gets an abortion and I'll cut ties with her. Grace, do you want to reconsider our marriage?"
Grace stopped and gave him a mocking look. "Ryan, haven't you always looked down on me? Now you're clingy. Are you starting to like me?"
"No way!" Ryan was confused. He couldn't be into Grace, but he couldn't stop thinking about her.
"If it's impossible, then stay away from me. Don't show up in front of me again. I don't want to see your face!" Grace kept walking.
At the traffic light, when it turned green, Grace crossed the street, and Ryan followed.
"Grace, explain yourself!" Ryan shouted.
"I've already made myself clear."
As Ryan moved towards her, a car that should have stopped suddenly sped up, heading straight for them. Grace instinctively pulled Ryan out of the way, but the car still clipped him, sending them both to the ground. Grace felt a sharp pain in her leg.
The car sped off. Despite the pain, Grace managed to get up and dial 911 for the cops and an ambulance. Ryan lay motionless on the pavement.
"Ryan? Ryan!" Grace called out, but he was already unconscious.
The incident happened so fast that Grace missed dinner. She told Lily to take everyone out and continue with their plans, assuring them she'd cover the bill.
Grace followed the ambulance to the hospital, where she got checked out and treated for her injuries.
Ryan was in worse shape and got rushed to the ER, still out cold.
The cops questioned Grace and checked the surveillance footage. The driver seemed drunk, hinting at a DUI rather than a deliberate hit, but they promised to keep digging.
Grace had a gut feeling it was intentional. The car was speeding so fast that if she hadn't pulled Ryan away, he might not have made it. She couldn't shake the thought that someone was out to get him. Could Patrick be behind it? She doubted it; despite any bad blood, she couldn't see him plotting to hurt Ryan. Maybe Ryan had unknowingly pissed someone off?
Good news came from the tests: Ryan's condition wasn't too bad, and he was expected to wake up soon.
Grace kept watching the surveillance footage, looking for any clues.
The Montgomery family, including Amy and Wendy, showed up soon after. Amy immediately started yelling at Grace and even tried to get physical. "You bitch! You slapped Wendy yesterday, and now this happens to Ryan because of you," she screamed.
"Did you set up this accident? You broke off the engagement, so why won't you leave Ryan alone? If anything happens to him, I won't let you off!" Amy's eyes blazed with anger, as if she wanted to tear Grace apart.
"This is a hospital. Keep your voice down and don't disturb other patients," Grace reminded her.
She was in a regular ward, not a VIP room like Ryan. Other patients were around, and Amy's shouting was bothering them.
"You dare to do it but won't let me speak? You broke off the engagement because you're seeing someone else. You're a bitch. What have the Montgomerys done to deserve this? Patrick and I treated you well. Why weren't you the one hit by the car? Why did it have to be Ryan? Grace, if Ryan is hurt, I'll take your life!" Amy's words were harsh.
Grace knew this family was nuts. She didn't want anything to do with them, but they kept dragging her into their mess.
"If you hate me that much, remember the police are right outside. If anything happens to me, they'll know who to look at first. It'll speed up the investigation," Grace said calmly.
"You!" Amy wasn't very smart, and Wendy and Ryan seemed to take after her.
Grace's sharp gaze didn't waver. "This is an era of equality. The way you're talking, people might think it's still the era of slavery. Do you think having money makes you superior?"
Amy seethed with rage. How could Grace stay so composed? "You bitch! Even if you weren't directly involved, it's all your fault. You're bad luck for Ryan. You've ruined his reputation!"
Grace laughed, "Do I need to ruin Ryan's reputation? He stinks on his own, wherever he goes."
