Chapter 119 We Made Up
"Why are you looking at me like that?" James asked, half amused, half annoyed.
He reached out to fix her curly hair, his eyes lingering on her smooth collarbone. "At the charity gala in a few days, that pink diamond necklace would look absolutely breathtaking on you."
Jessica felt warmth spread through her. She looked up, eyes bright, and said, "James, I don't need an expensive gift. I'm still a student. What you just said means more to me than any gift."
James gazed at her. Jessica was always happy with the smallest gestures. Remembering how rough he had been with her, he felt guilty.
He lowered his head, touching his forehead to hers, and whispered, "Jessica, I'm sorry."
Jessica trembled, a strange sensation stirring in her heart. James was always so proud, never one to apologize. Hearing "I'm sorry" from him was a first.
His unexpected gentleness and apology broke down her long-held grievances. In that moment, she felt she could forgive everything, even his past betrayal and humiliation.
Though Rose remaining a painful thorn in her heart, as long as James was with her, she didn't want to ruin the moment.
Jessica chose not to mention Rose again, afraid that bringing up this painful topic would shatter the fragile moment of tenderness they were sharing.
She whispered in his arms, "I don't blame you anymore."
In the sunset glow, James kissed her softly, afraid of hurting her.
Jessica's arms trembled as she wrapped them around his neck.
Although they had kissed before, those instances were always marked by his forceful dominance. This kiss was different; he was gentle, genuinely considering her feelings and guiding her.
Jessica almost melted in his arms. As things heated up, James deepened the kiss and led her to the bed.
But just as his passion surged, Jessica snapped back to reality and abruptly pushed him away. James stopped, his voice hoarse, "What's wrong?"
Jessica's eyes were red. "I'm not ready. Last time hurt too much. I'm scared."
James hadn't realized how much that night had affected her.
Jessica hurriedly put her clothes back on.
Seeing his cold expression, she asked cautiously, "Are you angry? I'm really scared."
"It's okay, let's go eat." James forced a smile, took her hand, and they went downstairs.
During dinner, Jessica's phone rang. Afraid James might misunderstand, she mentioned it was a message from Lily.
Since she got home, Lily had been worried Jessica and James might divorce, leaving her with nowhere to go.
Lily: [How did it go? Is it over? Should I come get you?]
Jessica replied: [We made up.]
Lily immediately called. Jessica answered. Across from her, James ate dinner, not interfering.
Jessica whispered, "Hello, Lily. Don't worry about me. I'm fine."
