Chapter 279 Deliberately Pleasing James (2)

Olivia yawned, "It's not even light out yet. Go catch some more Z's. How you gonna survive your internship if you're running on fumes?"

Jessica forced a weak smile. "I can't sleep, Liv. How 'bout I help with breakfast instead?"

Olivia hesitated. "Uh... I dunno. If Mr. Kelly catches you in here, he's gonna flip. Mrs. Kelly, you should really go rest."

Jessica then spilled the beans about John. She looked down and mumbled, "I gotta do this. It's the only way I can pay him back."

Sympathetically sighing, Olivia noted Jessica's overly mature demeanor for her age, constantly aiming to please James. Eventually, Olivia gave in and permitted her to help with breakfast. As the sky started to lighten and breakfast was almost ready, James strolled into the kitchen, eyes wide at the sight of Jessica in an apron. "What the heck are you doing here? I was wondering why you weren't upstairs," he remarked.

Jessica looked up, smiling softly. "I wanted to make breakfast for you. I've never done stuff like this for you before. I know I haven't been the best Mrs. Kelly..."

James stared at her, confused. Since last night, something was off about Jessica, something he couldn't put his finger on. "Isn't this Olivia's job? We got plenty of maids. I didn't marry you to be a housekeeper, Jess," he said gently.

His words warmed Jessica's heart, almost making her forget why she started this. She was doing it to make him happy, so he'd help her dad. But his words made her smile for real. "If it makes you happy, then I'm down."

James looked at the table full of breakfast. While he was pleased, he was also worried about her lack of sleep. He said with a hint of helplessness, "I'm really surprised and happy you did this for me, but don't make it a habit. I don't want you burning out."

Jessica went to the dining table with him and served him some porridge. James knew this wasn't like her. She'd never done housework before. But now, her change really puzzled him. Even though he liked it, her behavior was definitely not normal.

After breakfast, Jessica went upstairs to change and get ready for work.

James called Olivia over and asked coldly, "What's going on? Did Jessica say anything when she came to the kitchen this morning?"

Olivia remembered Jessica's words and said with a smile, "Mrs. Kelly is a grateful person! She said you have been busy helping her dad, so she wants to do something to make you happy!"

As understanding hit, James's expression darkened. So, all of this wasn't because she loved him or wanted to be a good wife. She was just trying to keep his support for her dad, John. The realization felt like a bucket of ice water dumped on him.

Olivia thought she was bringing James and Jessica closer and was pretty pleased with herself. She didn't notice the storm brewing inside him.

"You can go," James said curtly, his eyes fixed upstairs, frustration all over his face.
