Chapter 339 Pretending to Be a Couple (1)
Louisa stumbled, almost losing her footing.
She couldn't hold back her anger, "You threatened me to keep quiet back then. I can't believe you're still saying this to me now. Do you even see me as your mother anymore?"
John stayed silent for a long time before finally saying, "If you hadn't constantly made things hard for Thalia and brought Joan into our home, we wouldn't be divorced. You always ask why I'm so good to Jessica. It's because Thalia treated her like her own. Taking care of Jessica is the best way I can honor Thalia. It doesn't matter if she's my biological child or not. She's Thalia's and my child!"
Louisa felt a pang of regret. She thought, 'If I hadn't opposed John and Thalia back then and insisted on bringing Joan and Pearl into the family, would the Evans family be free of all this chaos now?'
At Ocean City University Hospital.
Kylie came out and saw Jessica waving at her from in front of a car. She walked over and asked, "You didn't take the subway today? Not worried about traffic?"
Jessica winked, "I'm off today."
Kylie looked puzzled, "It's not the weekend. How did that slave-driver teacher of yours let you have a day off?"
Jessica grinned, "Professor Howard is back, and he chewed out Cynthia last night. He told me to take a day off and rest."
"Oh my God, Jessica, Professor Howard noticed you already?" Kylie said, "I told you, you could do it. You might actually get into his grad program."
Jessica snapped back to reality, "Enough about me. Do you know why I'm off today and came to the hospital?"
Kylie looked confused, "To see Professor Howard?"
"What are you talking about?" Jessica pulled her into the car, "Isn't it someone's birthday today? I came to celebrate with her."
Kylie suddenly remembered her Facebook post and smiled sheepishly. "I usually spend my birthday alone. My parents live far away, so I'm used to it."
Jessica, driving, said, "Well, starting this year, you won't be spending your birthday alone anymore. You'll have me! By the way, there's a box on the back seat, a gift for you. Check it out."
Kylie said excitedly, "A gift too?" She turned around and grabbed the box from the back seat.
Opening the outer bag, she saw a luxury brand logo prominently displayed on the box.
"Oh my God, Elysia?" Kylie opened the box to find a classic tote bag.
Jessica explained, "It's practical. You often go to the study room, so you can use it to carry books or your laptop."
"This is too extravagant," Kylie asked in disbelief, "Is it really for me? Jessica, I can't believe I have my first luxury bag so soon."
Jessica felt a mix of heartache and compassion.
Seeing Kylie so happy, she smiled too. "As long as you like it."
When they passed a bakery, Jessica picked up the pre-ordered ice cream cake.
Kylie was almost moved to tears, "Jessica, don't laugh at me. I've never had such a grand birthday before."
"From now on, you'll have one every year," Jessica laughed, "Who knows, maybe next year you'll find your true love, and it won't be my turn to celebrate with you."
