Chapter 142 James Came to Save Her (1)
"Something came up at home, and I need to leave right away," James said alone.
Rose's eyes darkened; she had heard him mention Jessica's name.
Trying to hide her disappointment, she asked, "Can I go with you? I don't want to stay here alone."
She didn't trust James around Jessica and was tired of pretending to be depressed for therapy.
If this kept up, she might actually become depressed.
James gently declined, "You need to stay here. The doctor said your treatment has to be continuous. If you leave, you'll have to start over."
But Rose insisted, "With you by my side, I'm half cured. You're my best therapist."
Worried about Jessica but unable to resist Rose's pleading, James finally agreed to take her back.
At the Evans family, Jessica was locked by Louisa.
Jessica was suffocating because the summer heat without air conditioning or fans was unbearable.
She had been locked up since last night and couldn't sleep in such conditions.
She thought back and was sure: she hadn't pushed Pearl hard enough to make her fall.
Even if Pearl lost her balance, she should have fallen backward, not forward down the stairs.
Realizing this, she erupted, "Is anyone there? I have something to say! Open the door!"
A maid who had served Louisa for years came over.
She mocked, "Miss Jessica, ready to confess? Mrs. Evans said unless you admit you pushed Pearl, you won't get out. No food or drink either."
Jessica was extremely thirsty and hungry. The hot, humid air was making her sickness.
But she insisted, "Pearl fell by herself; I didn't push her. There must be another reason!"
Jessica couldn't understand why Pearl would frame her using her unborn child. What would Pearl gain if the child was lost?
Wasn't being Jack Kelly's wife the most important thing to Pearl?
Hearing Jessica refuse to confess, the maid said disdainfully, "Then stay in there! Without Mrs. Evans' orders, we can't let you out!"
Jessica leaned against the wall in despair, her empty stomach cramping and her mouth dry.
Two maids were attending to Louisa in the living room, gave her a massage.
On the coffee table were refreshing summer fruits.
Seeing the maid return, Louisa asked lazily, "Did she confess?"
The maid bowed and said, "Mrs. Evans, Miss Jessica didn't confess."
Louisa slammed the table and called John.
She snapped, "Jessica pushed Pearl down the stairs, and now Pearl has miscarried and is in critical condition. If it weren't for your favoritism, she wouldn't be like this. If you can't discipline her, I will!"
