John knew Jessica had a bad temper from being spoiled, but she wasn't unreasonable.
So, he eyed Joan suspiciously, "Are you sure it was just an argument? And Kevin's company didn't fail because of bad management but because of James?"
From what he knew, James and Jessica's marriage was just for show. He mused, 'Would James really help her?'
Joan nodded firmly, "Absolutely! If you don't believe me, go to the hospital and see Kevin yourself. Then you'll know we're telling the truth."
Louisa chimed in, "John, Jessica was in the wrong. Kevin's company is gone, and he's lost both legs. We have to compensate him."
John sighed, "If Jessica did this, we owe him."
Louisa, seeing John's reaction, suggested, "Go to the company and get some money to compensate him. That advertising company made only a few hundred thousand a year. Adding Kevin's legs, $700,000 isn't too much."
Louisa wanted to settle it quickly. If Kevin's demands weren't met, he'd spill everything to John.
But John was shocked, he retorted, "$700,000? Mom, do you know how much that is? My company can't just come up with that."
Joan angrily said, "It's all because of Jessica! Our family takes responsibility. You can't back down now."
John's face darkened, feeling guilty, and he couldn't scold Joan.
Louisa pressed, "If Kevin sues and accuses Jessica of intentional harm, it could ruin her future."
Thinking about Jessica's future, John sighed, "I'll figure something out. $700,000 is a lot for us. Give me some time."
Louisa and Joan exchanged a glance; the matter was settled.
After leaving home, John went to the company to check the accounts.
The finance department told him they couldn't advance that much money. It would break the cash flow, halt production, and jeopardize the company.
John felt angry, silently blaming Jessica for being impulsive and causing this mess.
Contemplating the situation, he decided to go to Jessica's school to find her.
Jessica had just finished class when she got John's call. Thinking she hadn't seen John in a while, Jessica's mood brightened.
"Dad, What brings you here?" she asked with a big smile.
John sighed, "Get in the car first, and we'll talk."
Jessica got in and said, "By the way, a new restaurant opened near the school. Can you take me there today?"
John said sternly, "Jessica! You've made a big mistake, and you still want to eat? Don't you feel any guilt?"
Jessica was stunned, "What do you mean? What did I do?"
John raised his voice, "You argued with Kevin, didn't you? No matter how wrong he was, you shouldn't have done that. I thought you were kind despite being spoiled. How could you let James do such a thing?"
