Chapter 213 You're Just a Pawn in His Game
James said, "Grandpa, don't worry, it's all sorted."
Gerald eyed him skeptically. "Really? After all these years with her, you sure it's over?"
"Yes, I made it clear," James replied firmly.
Gerald relaxed a bit and nodded. "When you dealt with Jack, I stayed quiet because I'm getting old. I had to clear the way for you at the Kelly Corporation. Treat Jessica well and hurry up with that great-grandchild before I kick the bucket."
Downstairs was chaos. As Jessica came down, an ambulance arrived, and medics were loading Jack onto a stretcher. Linda approached her, looking almost manic, and started laughing.
Jessica, confused, asked, "Are you crazy? How can you laugh when Jack's in such bad shape?"
Linda smirked and said, "I finally get it. This was all James's setup! Jessica, you're just a pawn!"
Jessica felt a chill. "What do you mean?" she asked, her voice shaking.
Linda sneered, "James has hated Jack for ages. He used you to trap Jack. Now Jack's embezzled three million dollars, and James has him by the throat. Jack's future is basically in James's grasp now."
Jessica felt a cold sweat. She retorted, "You're just trying to stir things up. You think I'll believe you?"
Linda squinted and sneered, "If you didn't believe me, you wouldn't have asked."
By then, Jack was in the ambulance, and Linda quickly followed.
Jessica felt panicked. Could Linda be right?
Her palms were sweaty. She told herself, 'No, James wouldn't use me.'
Just then, James's voice broke in, "What are you spacing out for?" He had walked up to her.
Jessica snapped back and instinctively stepped back. Thinking of what Linda said, she felt a chill.
James noticed her odd behavior and frowned, "What's wrong?"
"Nothing," Jessica forced a smile and changed the subject, "Shouldn't we be going back?"
James didn't push it and nodded, "Yes, Grandpa needs rest. Let's go." He tried to hold her hand, but she pulled away.
On the way to the car, Jessica kept her distance. James followed, sensing something was off.
In the car, Jessica stared out the window, unusually quiet. James finally snapped, "Are you mad at me for being harsh on Jack? Do you feel sorry for him?"
Jessica sighed and said, "As long as you get what you want, why care about my feelings?"
James grabbed her face and demanded, "What do you mean? Make it clear! Today, in front of everyone, you defended Jack. Do you remember who you are? Do you remember who your husband is?"
