Jessica hadn't figured out how to respond to Cynthia.
The director stepped in to ease the tension, saying, "Jessica, since Cynthia has already admitted to what happened that day, we know you've been wronged! Let's just let this go, okay? Rest assured, our hospital will definitely impose severe punishment on Cynthia!"
It was certain that Cynthia would be fired. But the director also didn't want Jessica to pursue the matter further. After all, this was an internal scandal of the hospital, and it concerned the hospital's reputation. The family members had already decided not to pursue it. If Jessica made a big deal out of it, the hospital would still be implicated.
Therefore, the director gave Nathan a look, hoping he would help persuade Jessica.
Nathan, however, directly ignored the director's look and said to Jessica, "Jessica, don't feel any pressure. This incident has indeed caused significant damage to your reputation. Even if you want to pursue it to the end, no one will blame you."
Cynthia was startled and quickly looked at Jessica, almost ready to kneel before her.
She knew that she had already lost all face, and everyone would despise her. But she still held onto a last shred of hope, fearing that Jessica would expose her online.
After a long silence, Jessica said, "Director, Professor Howard, can I talk to Cynthia alone?"
"Of course." Nathan nodded and said to the staff, "Today's morning meeting ends here. Everyone, go about your business."
With that, Jessica and Cynthia went to the duty room alone.
Cynthia said with a tearful face, "Jessica, I really know I was wrong. I wronged you. Please forgive me, okay? I will leave Ocean City and never come back."
Jessica only asked one question, "What did James say to you?"
It was only now that she realized that perhaps last night, James met with Cynthia not for a date but because of her.
Thinking of this, Jessica became even more curious about what James had done for her.
Cynthia gave a bitter smile and said, "Jessica, actually, I really envy you. You have such a good husband in James; he really cares about you. If it were someone else, they would have long been unable to resist showing off such a husband! I didn't expect you to keep it so well hidden."
Thinking back to when she wanted Jessica to set her up with James, Cynthia felt even more ashamed.
Jessica incredulously said, "He told you everything? Why did he tell you all this?"
Cynthia said despondently, "Because you are his wife. He said he didn't want you to suffer any slander or misunderstanding. I only found out later that he came to the department alone, asking each patient if they knew any clues. In the end, he discovered that Colin's robot had a recording function and had coincidentally recorded our conversation that day."
Jessica's heart tightened, and she confirmed in disbelief, "Are you saying that James personally came to the department to find evidence?"
Cynthia wiped her tears and said, "Yes, I didn't expect someone of his status to quietly do so much for you. I was too overconfident. Of all people to make an enemy of, why did I choose you? With a man like that helping you, it's only right that I lost to you."
Jessica remained silent, Cynthia's words echoing in her mind.
It turned out that James knew what she truly wanted.
