Chapter 386 No Longer Qualified to Sacrifice for Him (4)

"Do you have time? If it's inconvenient, I can handle the shift alone. You go ahead and do your thing."

Jessica originally planned to cancel everything tomorrow to celebrate James's birthday.

But now, she just nodded lightly and said, "I can do it tomorrow."

"Alright, it's settled then."

Nathan felt a strange joy at the thought of personally supervising Jessica during the shift.

He couldn't help but mock himself. It wasn't his first day mentoring a student, so why did he feel this way?

Or perhaps, Jessica was indeed different for him.

That evening, Jessica told James and Gerald about her shift.

Both were disappointed, especially James.

He asked, "Can't you take a day off or switch shifts? Do you have to work tomorrow?"

"Yeah, I can't find anyone to switch with."

Jessica found a good excuse and said, "Besides, I'm just an intern. How could I have the authority to decide my shifts?"

Gerald chimed in, "That's right, James. Jessica's internship isn't easy. Don't make it harder for her. It's the thought that counts."

James suddenly remembered something and said, "Wait a minute, wasn't Cynthia, who was mentoring you, fired? So who are you working with now?"

Jessica froze, not daring to tell him she was working with Nathan.

Otherwise, with James's possessiveness and a strong sense of control, if he knew she was working with Nathan, who knows what kind of trouble it would cause?

So, Jessica covered her guilt and said, "Even though Cynthia is gone, there are other teachers."

James didn't think much of it, but he felt a significant sense of disappointment.

After all, this birthday was supposed to be spent with Gerald and Jessica, and it might be their last one together.

But Jessica had to work.

That night, Jessica avoided James's arm reaching out to her.

Her mind kept replaying Rose's words from earlier in the day.

If she was now sleeping in the same bed as James, she could convince herself it was to reassure Gerald, not for her desires.

But if she didn't refuse those intimate actions with James, she would truly be no different from a third party.

Sensing Jessica's resistance and distance, James felt that all his efforts over the past few days had been in vain as if they were back to square one.

His voice sounded particularly low and hoarse in the dark, tinged with a bit of desolation, "Jessica, what's wrong?"

"Nothing," Jessica replied stiffly and guiltily.

James was silent for a long time, then gradually reached out to hold her, burying his head in her neck.

He spoke with a sense of loss, asking softly, "Are you unable to switch shifts tomorrow?"

Hearing his childlike desolate tone, Jessica felt both sad and helpless.

She wanted to celebrate his birthday.

Every year, she prepared so carefully for his birthday, but she never once saw him blow out the candles or smile.

But this year, when he finally turned to look at her, she no longer had the right to make any sacrifices for him.
