Chapter 84 Introducing Her to A Potential Partner
Joan quickly put on a friendly face and tried to take Jessica's hand, but Jessica dodged.
Joan's eyes sparkled as she said, "Jessica, how can you talk to your grandma like that? You've got it all wrong. She's worried about you being mistreated by your husband in the Kelly family. She doesn't want you to end up with nothing."
Jessica felt there was more to this meeting. Joan's behavior reminded her of the saying: when someone offers help unnecessarily, they usually want something.
Jessica frowned, "What do you want from me today? If it's nothing important, I'm leaving."
Louisa stopped her, "Wait! You're so ungrateful. We're just worried about you not being treated well in the Kelly family. We're your family; we can't just ignore it."
Jessica sneered, "Grandma, how do you plan to help me? Can you really help?"
"Of course," Louisa said slowly. "Joan's cousin owns a small company. We've been looking for a match for you and think you should meet him. He's a bit older and widowed, but he just wants someone to care for him. He's definitely better than your current husband—James."
Jessica suddenly understood their real intentions. She suppressed her rising anger.
She sat on the sofa, pretending to be interested, and asked, "How old is he? How much is he worth? What does he look like? What kind of car does he drive?"
Joan, surprised by Jessica's interest, quickly showed a photo of her cousin. "He's not that old, just a bit bald, which makes him look older. But he's only 39. He runs an advertising company and makes hundreds of thousands a year."
Looking at the photo of the greasy, balding man, Jessica felt nauseous.
She smiled at Joan, "Joan, if I marry him, we'll be closer, right? Should I call you cousin then? What should Pearl call me? Aunt?"
Joan looked awkward and said, "Titles don't matter! Your happiness does."
Jessica looked at Pearl and mocked, "Alright, have Pearl call me that. I never thought I'd gain a niece today."
Pearl, furious, screamed, "What nonsense are you talking about? Jessica, don't even think about it!" Then she turned to Louisa, and pouted, "Grandma, are you going to do something about her or not?"
Louisa angrily said, "Jessica, don't be rude. Don't think marrying Joan's cousin is beneath you. Remember, you married into the Kelly family at your mother's request. How long can that last? If you get divorced, you'll be a remarried woman. Marrying a man who makes hundreds of thousands a year is a blessing for you!"
