Chapter 324 She Is Still His Darling (4)

The next morning, just as the sun was starting to rise, Jessica's phone rang, waking her up.

Half-asleep, she answered and realized it was the detention center calling.

The cop on the other side said, "Are you John's daughter? He got into a fight and broke two ribs. He needs surgery. You need to come to the hospital right away to sign the consent form."

Jessica shot up in bed, wide awake and scared out of her mind.

She got the address and jumped out of bed.

James woke up too, catching bits of the conversation. "Calm down. I'll go with you," he said.

He drove her to the hospital as fast as he could.

At John's ward, two cops were standing guard.

Jessica, almost in tears, asked, "How's my dad? Who did this to him?"

"Miss Evans, please sign the form first. He's already in surgery," one of the officers said.

The cops wouldn't say anything else and just took Jessica to sign the surgery consent form.

James quickly called Michael, asking him to come over and use his connections to find out what happened.

Outside the operating room, Jessica cried, feeling hopeless.

She blamed herself for not getting John out sooner.

'If I had gotten him out earlier, he wouldn't be going through this,' she thought.

She had already lost her mom. Losing her dad too? She couldn't even imagine it.

Just then, a strong arm wrapped around her.

James's gentle voice said, "Michael will be here soon. We'll find out what happened. Stop crying. Your dad wouldn't want to see you like this."

"It's all my fault," Jessica sobbed. "He hit Rose because of me. It's all my fault!"

James held her, gently patting her back. "It's not your fault, Jessica. Adults make their own choices. Whatever he did, it was his choice. You need to stay strong so he can see hope, okay?"

Under his comfort, Jessica finally calmed down a bit.

Soon, Michael arrived.

James asked seriously, "Did you find out what happened? What went down in the prison?"

Jessica looked at Michael, desperate for answers.

Michael sighed and said, "John got into a fight with his driver after an argument. He accused the driver of framing him, and the driver didn't back down. So the two of them had a fight. But the driver was young and strong, and John was no match for him. He ended up with three broken ribs.

Jessica listened, her heart aching.

She pictured John getting beaten in prison, and it felt like a knife to her heart.

Tears silently streamed down her face.

"My dad is already so old, and he has to suffer in prison because of me! It's all my fault!" she murmured.

James looked at her, at a loss for words.

He knew that right now, words wouldn't help.

The most urgent thing was to get John out.
