Chapter 343 Wrongly Accused (1)
Jessica took a moment to gather herself. Even though she felt a bit awkward, she thought of Gerald and said, "I'll give it my best shot."
James couldn't help but think how ironic the whole situation was between him and Jessica. They could've been a loving couple, but here they were, stuck in this mess.
Jessica checked the time and said, "I gotta get back to my internship. It's almost 8 AM, and I need to be there for the shift change."
She had skipped work all day yesterday, and if she didn't show up today, Cynthia would definitely be on her case.
Noticing the dark circles under her eyes, James said, "You stayed with Grandpa all night. Are you sure you can handle work now? Why don't you take one more day off? I'll take you home to rest."
"I'm fine," Jessica replied, keeping her distance. "I should go. I'll come back to see Grandpa after my shift."
James watched her walk away, feeling a pang of loss.
In the Cardiology Department.
When Jessica rushed in, the shift change was already underway.
She bent over as she entered and immediately felt Cynthia's eyes on her.
Jessica quickly looked down, avoiding that intense stare.
Finally, the shift change was over. Jessica nervously approached Cynthia and asked, "Ms. Wells, is there anything you need me to do today?"
"Oh, how could I dare ask you to do anything?" Cynthia sneered. "You've only been here a few days, and already Professor Howard is vouching for you. Should I be taking orders from you now?"
Jessica wasn't one to suck up to others. Since Cynthia was being sarcastic, Jessica didn't back down. She calmly said, "Ms. Wells, if you're unhappy with Professor Howard's actions, you can take it up with him. I'm just an intern, not worth your anger."
Cynthia snorted, squinting at her. "What a sharp tongue you have. Do you think having Professor Howard's support means you can be arrogant? Don't forget, I'm the one who evaluates your internship! Besides, how often does someone as busy as Professor Howard come to the department? Do you really think he can protect you?"
Jessica couldn't understand why Cynthia had it out for her. But for now, Cynthia was her mentor, and her fate was in Cynthia's hands. So, Jessica had to swallow her pride and hang in there until the rotation was over.
Just then, a young nurse walked in and said, "Jessica, Professor Howard is in the operating room and wants you to assist."
Cynthia immediately looked displeased and said, "What? Let Jessica assist? Professor Howard must be mistaken! Jessica is just an intern who knows nothing. How can she help?"
The young nurse replied blankly, "But Professor Howard specifically asked for Jessica."
Then she urged, "Jessica, you should go quickly. The surgery is about to start. Being chosen by Professor Howard to assist is a privilege many doctors don't get."
Cynthia's face turned red with anger, and she said resentfully, "Go ahead! But when you come back, you still have to finish all your tasks. If you can't, you'll have to work overtime!"
Jessica didn't want to miss the learning opportunity and headed to the operating room.
The surgery wrapped up around noon.
Nathan smiled at her and said, "Jessica, you were much better in the operating room this time compared to the first time. At least, you handled the preliminary work with ease. You're the fastest learner I've ever seen!"
