Chapter 558 Always the One Who Is Let Down (4)

Nathan was taken aback by her condition. He grabbed her shoulders and said, "Hey, calm down. I just don't want you giving everything to a guy like that. I don't want you to get hurt."

But Jessica had heard enough. She slapped his hands away and bolted out the door.

By the time Nathan realized what was happening, he was already chasing after her.

Unfortunately, Jessica was quick, and by the time Nathan got outside, she was long gone.

Kennedy grabbed his arm and said, "Nathan, where are you going?"

"Mom, let go."

Nathan was frantic. "She's not in a good place right now. Something could happen to her."

Kennedy spoke firmly, "If you keep this up, something will happen to you too! Can't you see? She wants to leave our family so badly. She's in such a rush to get back; she must have something more important to deal with. Nathan, the one who needs to wake up right now is you!"

Kennedy's words were like a cold shower, snapping Nathan out of his impulsiveness. He calmed down.

At the mansion.

Jessica returned looking disheveled and panicked, which scared Olivia.

"Mrs. Kelly?"

Olivia rushed to her side, supporting her. "What happened? Where's Mr. Kelly?"

Jessica stared blankly at Olivia and asked, "He hasn't come back at all?"

"No."

Olivia frowned. "I thought you two were together yesterday."

Jessica gave a knowing, bitter smile.

Of course, why would he come back?

What was she even hoping for?

Seeing her like this, Olivia was extremely worried. "Mrs. Kelly, let me call Mr. Kelly. Are you feeling unwell? Should I get the family doctor to check on you?"

"No need, I'm fine."

Jessica dragged her exhausted body upstairs.

Back in the bedroom, she drew all the curtains.

Even though it was daytime, she didn't want to see any light. She just wanted to drown in this endless darkness.

No one could save her, and no one could pull her out of this mire.

She didn't know how much time had passed until night fell, and she heard those familiar footsteps outside.

Jessica's heart trembled slightly, and she curled her lips into a faint smile.

He finally decided to come back.

When James entered, the room was pitch black.

He turned on the light and saw Jessica still sleeping, and he let out a small sigh of relief.

Jessica kept her eyes closed, but her heart raced as his footsteps approached.

But she had to pretend to be asleep because she was afraid that if she faced him, she wouldn't be able to stop herself from questioning him!

It wasn't until his cool fingertips brushed through her hair that Jessica had to wake up.

She pretended to stretch nonchalantly and smiled at him. "You're back?"

"Yeah, I'm back."

He still carried the dampness from outside, with a hint of weariness.

James pulled her into his arms and asked softly, "Olivia said you didn't eat much today. Are you feeling unwell? And last night, Olivia said you didn't come back. Where did you go?"

"And you?"

Jessica's eyes sparkled as she looked at him without blinking. "Olivia said you didn't come back either. Where were you last night?"

A flicker of guilt crossed James's eyes. He forced a smile and said, "Just dealing with some company stuff. It was stressing me out. Sorry, I forgot to tell you I wouldn't be back last night."

Jessica felt a wave of self-mockery and sadness. She followed his lead and asked, "So, did you finish dealing with your company stuff?"
