Chapter 274 It's All Because of You

After hanging up, Lily bolted to the hospital like her life depended on it. When she got there, she found Jessica and practically yanked her outside, leaving Jessica totally confused and dazed.

"Why the rush? What's going on?" Jessica asked, trying to keep up.

Lily, still gasping for air, blurted out, "Did you know your dad's in deep trouble?"

Jessica's confusion turned to full-blown panic. "My dad? What happened to him?"

"I was in Michael's office today and saw an indictment against him for intentional injury. And guess what? Michael's his attorney now," Lily spilled, words tumbling out in a rush.

Jessica's world spun. Her mind went blank as she tried to process the bombshell. Grabbing Lily's hand in desperation, she asked, "Why would my dad commit a crime? Who did he hurt?"

Lily shook her head, frustrated. "The file was too thick to read in detail. I don't know the specifics, just that your dad's in serious trouble. You need to go home and find out more. I gotta get back to the magazine, so I can't go with you," she said, urgency dripping from her voice.

Jessica thanked Lily and dashed outside, frantically waving down a cab. She practically begged the driver to floor it, urging him on as they sped toward the Evans Family's home.

When she arrived, a maid rushed to inform Louisa. "Mrs. Evans, Ms. Jessica Evans is back!"

Louisa, leaning heavily on her cane, stood up, her heart pounding with hope. "Oh my, is there a breakthrough in John's case?"

Jessica burst into the villa, sweat running down her face despite the late autumn chill. "Grandma, what happened to Dad? Why didn't anyone tell me?" she demanded, her voice trembling with fear.

Louisa's initial anger at seeing Jessica softened when she considered her status in John and James' lives. Even so, she couldn't completely hide her resentment. "It's all because of you!" Louisa spat out. "If it weren't for you, your dad wouldn't have..."

Before Louisa could finish, James entered the room, his presence both calming and commanding. He shot Louisa a warning look, signaling her to zip it.

Turning to Jessica, he said calmly, "I didn't want you to worry, so I kept it from you. Didn't expect you'd find out anyway."

Jessica's eyes filled with tears. "If I hadn't found out today, how much longer were you planning to keep this from me?" she questioned, her voice breaking.

James gently held her in his arms, patting her back to comfort her. "Alright, alright, I'll tell you later. Just come home with me, okay? I'll explain everything when we get back, alright?"

Jessica's mind was in utter chaos, so she let James hold her and lead her out. As they left, James deliberately turned back to glare at Louisa, warning her to keep her mouth shut.

Thanks to Michael's heads-up earlier, James managed to intercept Jessica in time. Otherwise, who knew what kind of showdown might've gone down?

And so, Jessica followed James back home.
