Chapter 295 She Was Just His Pet

James couldn't wrap his head around how Jessica's vibe and feelings flipped so fast.

He was straight-up nervous and anxious.

How the heck was he gonna get Jessica to stick around willingly?

Right then, his phone buzzed. It was Gerald.

"Grandpa," James answered, "It's super late. What's up?"

Gerald's voice was all raspy and weak. "You and Jessica haven't been over in a bit. Did you guys have another blowout?"

James masked his gloom and replied coolly, "Nah, we're good. But you sound beat. You feeling okay?"

Gerald hesitated forever before mumbling, "No, no, I'm fine. Where's Jessica? I wanna talk to her."

"Alright, I'll grab her," James said, taking the phone and heading back to the bedroom.

When he walked in, he saw Jessica looking all freaked out, like she was hiding something.

Seeing him, Jessica quickly shoved whatever it was back into her bag.

James acted like he didn't notice and handed her the phone, saying, "Grandpa wants a word."

Jessica was a bit stunned, feeling guilty for not visiting Gerald in ages.

She quickly took the phone and stepped out onto the balcony.

Jessica chatted with Gerald for a bit, telling him to take care and that she'd visit over the weekend.

When she came back, she found James sitting on the edge of the bed. His face was hidden in the dim light, making it hard to read his expression.

When he looked up and their eyes met, his face was stone-cold serious.

Jessica's heart skipped a beat, and she looked at him nervously.

Suddenly, a pillbox was tossed at her.

James snapped, "What the hell is this?"

After a moment of panic, Jessica picked up the birth control pills and calmly said, "You know exactly what it is."

Her words totally set James off!

He yanked her in front of him and gripped her jaw tight, forcing her to look at him.

He shouted angrily, "Jessica, you're really pushing it!"

Through gritted teeth, he said, "I put up with you, spoil you, try to keep you happy, but you still don't appreciate it. You just have to piss me off, don't you?"

Jessica's eyes filled with tears, and she choked out, "I once had a little cat. I loved and spoiled it. But it was just a pet. When I was happy, I'd pet it. When I wasn't, I'd scold it."

James was so mad he laughed. He nodded and said, "Good! You heartless woman, you're really something!"

He had never put so much effort into pleasing a woman, not even Rose.

But for Jessica, he even skipped work to hit up Golden Plaza, buying trendy clothes and shoes like a college student.

In the end, all he got was her saying he treated her like a pet!

No woman had ever dared to talk to him like that!

No woman had ever dared to stomp on his pride like that!

James's eyes were dark, and he said through gritted teeth, "Don't regret this!"

He shoved her aside, and Jessica, losing her balance, fell onto the carpet.

He instinctively wanted to help her up but held back, turned around, and slammed the door as he left.

Jessica watched his determined back and couldn't hold back her tears.

She hated herself.

She didn't even dare to face the disappointment in his eyes.
