Chapter 306 James is Injured (2)
Staring at the darkening sky, Pearl felt kinda weird.
"Why hasn't Jessica returned yet?" she wondered out loud.
Did Jessica bail and decide never to come back?
Honestly, Pearl wouldn't mind if she vanished for good.
She then asked, "Mr. Kelly, you wanna crash now? You've been grinding all day. Must be wiped out."
James glanced at the clock.
Jessica still wasn't back. No way he could sleep.
He couldn't shake off the worry gnawing at him.
Grabbing his coat, he bolted out the door.
Pearl watched him leave, clenching her fists in anger, muttering, "You and Jessica ain't gonna happen!"
Jessica finally wrapped up all the stuff Cynthia dumped on her a little past eleven and could head home.
But by then, even the last subway had stopped running.
She was kinda pissed; the car was James', and she hadn't driven it this morning. Now, she had to hoof it along the roadside, hoping to snag a cab.
No luck, though. She walked forever without spotting an empty one.
Every car that passed was packed.
She pulled her jacket tighter and kept trudging in the cold wind.
The streets were almost deserted at this hour; she'd be lying if she said she wasn't scared.
But she had to tough it out; John was counting on her, and she had dreams to chase.
Still, she felt a wave of self-pity.
While other girls her age were having fun on campus, she was stuck in this mess.
She sniffled, her nose red, walking and staring at the stars.
If her mom was one of those stars, she hoped she'd watch over her, keep her safe from the darkness and the future.
Just then, two drunk guys staggered towards her, clutching nearly empty bottles.
Startled, Jessica froze.
But they spotted her, laughed like maniacs, and stumbled towards her, arms around each other.
Jessica's first instinct was to run, but one of them blocked her path.
They cornered her from both sides.
"Hey there, where you headed so late?" one guy asked with a sleazy grin.
"Yeah, it's dangerous out here. Come with us. We'll take good care of you!" the other one added.
Terrified, Jessica screamed, "Let me go! Help, help!"
But it was too late, and this road was super secluded, so no one heard her.
The two guys started dragging her, saying, "Come on! We won't hurt you!"
Jessica cried in fear, struggling with all her might. But she couldn't break free.
She suddenly thought of that night when she was attacked by a stranger. If these creeps got their way today, she'd rather die.
Just when she was about to lose all hope, someone kicked one of the thugs from behind.
Then the other one got kicked away too.
When Jessica looked up, James was already throwing punches at the two drunks.
These guys were wasted, so they fought hard.
But James wasn't someone to mess with either.
The scene turned into chaos.
Worried, Jessica quickly pulled out her phone to call the cops.
