Chapter 252 Rose's Career Is Ruined (3)
In the evening, Jessica rolled back home after her internship and was floored. She rushed over, eyes wide. "Dad, what the heck happened? At your age, still throwing punches?"
Louisa, hanging nearby, chimed in, "Your dad claims he tripped, but come on, it looks like he got into a brawl. Why else would he have bruises on his face and arm? And that busted lip?"
John tried to play it cool and remarked, "I told you, I fell. It'll be fine in a couple of days. Don't blow it out of proportion."
Jessica, both worried and ticked off, snapped, "I don't buy it. I'm a doctor. This ain't from a fall. You can't fool me."
"Believe it or not, that's the story." With that, John buried his head in his dinner.
Jessica, super upset, whipped out her phone. "You were clearly jumped. I'm calling the cops. They'll sort this out."
John stopped her, sighing, "Jessica. I fought back, but there were too many of them. I talked to a lawyer, and even if we called the cops, it'd just be 'mutual combat.' It's pointless!"
Jessica's eyes went wide, pressing on, "So you did get into a fight? Spill it. Why? Who did this?"
John went quiet, then said, "Come on, let's chat in the study."
Once in the study, John finally spilled the beans.
He said, fuming, "I went to the Kelly Corporation to confront James. Wanted to ask why he treated you like that. But before I could get in, I ran into that woman at the entrance. Maybe it was fate, giving me a shot to stand up for my daughter!"
A hint of satisfaction crossed John's face. "Jessica, don't be sad. At least I exposed her true colors in front of those parents. Now everyone knows what she's really like. Her having the security guards rough me up was just payback!"
Hearing what John did for her and seeing his injuries, Jessica couldn't hold back her tears.
John quickly tried to comfort her, "Jessica, don't cry. I'm fine. I just regret not knowing sooner you were hurting and not stopping that woman from messing with you."
Jessica's voice shook. "Dad. It's my fault. You're getting older, and I still make you worry about me."
She started to walk out.
John hurriedly stopped her. "Where are you going?"
Jessica, teeth clenched. "I'm going to James! I let them go. I can give up everything! But I won't let anyone treat you like this! I won't let it go!"
John said coldly, "Stop!"
Then he looked at Jessica with concern. "In your thing with James, you're at a disadvantage. Now that you're finally home and can have some peace, why go back to that mess?"
Jessica looked at John with guilt but said firmly, "But I can't just let this go! I can't let you suffer for me for nothing."
