Chapter 441 Buying an Engagement Ring (3)

James nodded and said, "Alright, I'll be here these few days."

Jessica hesitated for a moment and said worriedly, "Are you sure you can skip work? Didn't you say that the shareholders of The Kelly Corporation are already unhappy with you? If you don't go to work, won't they be even more upset?"

James gently explained, "You don't understand the company's matters. Let them be; it's not worth worrying about."

His confident and calm demeanor slightly eased Jessica's concerns.

James reassured her, "These days, just stay with grandpa and don't overthink, okay?"

Jessica nodded firmly and said, "I will."

That night, they slept in the small lounge outside Gerald's hospital room.

The bed wasn't big, but it was just right for them to snuggle closely together.

Jessica quietly gazed at him, her eyes filled with dependence and admiration.

James had always been like a mountain, protecting her and appearing when she was most desperate and in need of him.

She always doubted how much he truly cared for her.

But everything he did for her made her heart more convinced and secure.

A thought grew stronger in her mind; Jessica even wanted to tell him about her pregnancy right then and there.

"James, I..."

Jessica swallowed her words.

With Gerald so gravely ill, she felt it was inappropriate to share her joy with James.

Jessica silently blamed herself, feeling it was wrong.

James was almost asleep when he heard her call his name. He kissed the top of her head and lazily asked, "What's up? Do you have something to tell me?"

Jessica gently said, "Yeah, I just wanted to say goodnight."

"Alright, goodnight."

James felt a deep sense of contentment holding the soft Jessica in his arms.

The next morning, Jessica went to her department to request leave.

Nathan saw that she was asking for a week off and asked, "Is something wrong?"

After all, the hospital had a rule that interns who took more than a week off had to report to the education department, and their internship would be extended, which was quite troublesome.

Jessica truthfully said, "My grandpa is not doing well. The doctor said it could be any day now. I want to take a few days off to be with him."

"Your grandpa?"

Nathan said, "How come you never mentioned him? Is it serious? Do you need me to find some specialists for you?"

Jessica shook her head and said, "It's late-stage cancer. Although he's James's grandpa, he's always treated me like his own granddaughter. At a time like this, I have to be by his side."

Nathan felt a bit uncomfortable hearing Jessica mention James, but he maintained his composure.

He immediately approved Jessica's leave and said, "Take good care of your family. Don't worry about the education department; I'll talk to them. Your internship won't be delayed."

Jessica smiled gratefully at him and said, "Thank you, Mr. Howard. But without a student on duty with you, can you manage alone?"

Nathan said reassuringly, "It's true, having you on duty with me has made things easier. But don't forget, I was once a junior doctor too. I've handled all kinds of shifts and seen all kinds of situations. Don't worry."

Jessica was amused by Nathan's humor. After thanking him, she returned to Gerald's hospital room.
