Chapter 280 Didn't I Tell You to Sleep First?

Jessica was already dressed and making her way downstairs, thinking James was ready to drive her to work like always.

At the door, she put his shoes in front of him, waiting for him to put them on.

James looked at her, and out of nowhere, he got pissed. He shoved her aside, grumbling as he slipped on his shoes. "You're my wife, not my maid!" he barked before storming out.

Jessica just stood there, totally thrown off. He had been fine this morning, so what the heck happened? Did she mess up? Forget something? She couldn't figure it out.

Feeling ditched and rattled, she headed to the hospital alone, hoping work would take her mind off things. But all day, her thoughts kept drifting back to James's anger. Finally, during a quick break, she nervously typed out a message, deleting and retyping it a bunch of times before sending it.

Jessica: [What did I do to make you mad? Just tell me, and I'll say sorry.]

But it was like her message vanished into thin air; James didn't reply all day. When she got home that night, he still wasn't back. Olivia said he had some social event, which only made Jessica more anxious. Was he avoiding her? Was he that angry?

James, meanwhile, was trying to run away from his mixed-up feelings. The dinner event was a temporary escape from his anger and confusion. He spent the night chatting with the chief handling John's case, hoping business and a few drinks would drown out his frustration.

By the time it wrapped up, it was already eleven. When James got home, the lights were still on. He thought Olivia had left them on, but found Jessica waiting in the living room, her eyes red and worried.

James frowned. "Why aren't you asleep yet?"

Jessica's eyes were red, like a sad little bunny. She said, "Did I do something to make you mad? Just tell me, and I'll apologize."

"No," James snapped, not in the mood for a heart-to-heart. "Just go to sleep."

Her humility and desperation made him want to blow up, but he held it in. Loosening his tie, he headed upstairs, needing space.

Jessica watched him go, feeling totally wronged and helpless. No matter what she did, things just got worse. And there was that smell on James – booze and some woman's perfume, maybe Rose's. The suspicion ate at her.

Back in the bedroom, she couldn't sleep. She needed to know about John's situation but was too scared to ask James, especially now.

Meanwhile, James hid out in his study, smoking in silence, trying to cool off. After a few minutes alone, he felt calmer and went back to the bedroom. Jessica was still awake, perched anxiously on the bed. "Didn't I tell you to sleep?" he asked, clearly annoyed. "If you got something on your mind, spit it out!"
