Chapter 333 We Can Still Be Friends (2)
"Let's not talk about her anymore; it's just gonna bring you down," Jessica said, trying to lighten the mood. She quickly switched topics. "By the way, where are those gloves you promised me?"
Kylie grinned and pulled them out. "Here they are! Do you like them?"
The gloves were thickly knitted, with a red base and two white antlers, super cute.
"They're gorgeous. Thanks, Kylie," Jessica said, genuinely touched.
Seeing how sincere Jessica was, Kylie waved it off, a bit embarrassed. "Don't mention it. We're good friends."
Jessica slipped the gloves on and asked, "How do I look?"
"Pretty good," Kylie said with a smile. "See, this is what I'm talking about. We should treat ourselves better and not let people who don't matter get to us, right?"
Jessica knew exactly who Kylie was talking about. Looking at the cozy gloves on her hands and the funny texts from Lily on her phone, Jessica reminded herself, 'There's so much good stuff in the world to focus on. No point in letting the past drag me down.'
Trying to lift her spirits, Kylie suggested, "How about we take a nice nap this afternoon and then catch a movie tonight?"
Jessica sighed, "I can't. I have to go to the hospital this afternoon."
Kylie looked surprised, "Why? Didn't you just work the night shift? Can't you rest after that?"
Night shifts were brutal, often requiring staying up all night. Plus, doctors usually had to do rounds and handle patients afterward, not getting to rest until noon. Skipping an afternoon nap after a night shift was just cruel.
Jessica explained, looking down, "My supervisor wants me to go in this afternoon to prep for tomorrow's surgery. Didn't I tell you? She always picks on me and can't be woken up after sleeping through the night."
"Oh, right," Kylie said, getting angry. "Is she the one who chewed you out when you tried to wake her? She's not even menopausal. Why is she such a pain? I've never heard of anyone not being allowed to go home and rest after a night shift."
Jessica shrugged, "Forget it. Just two more months, and I'm out of this department. I'll tough it out. What else can I do? Just my luck."
After a quick lunch, Jessica managed to sleep for a little over an hour before heading back to the hospital for overtime. From yesterday to today, she hadn't had a full night's sleep, so you can imagine how exhausted she was.
Cynthia didn't show up in the afternoon but bombarded her with tasks through messages. Jessica saw that these tasks would keep her busy until the evening. As it got darker, classmates and teachers left the office one by one. Only Jessica and the night shift teacher were left.
The night shift teacher couldn't help but ask, "Didn't you work the night shift last night? And now you're still here. Can you handle it?"
Jessica pouted, "The work's not done yet."
"Cynthia really trusts you, huh? She doesn't do anything herself and dumps everything on you," the night shift teacher grumbled. Suddenly, she stood up and said to the door, "Professor Howard, what brings you here so late?"
Nathan replied calmly, "There's an emergency surgery I need to handle personally."
The night shift teacher sighed, "Too bad I'm on the night shift and have to stay in the ward. Otherwise, I'd join you. What a great opportunity!"
Nathan smiled, "It's okay. I'll call the doctors in my group to come over soon."
Suddenly, his eyes landed on Jessica in the far corner.
