Chapter 95 Warmth in the Heart

James immediately told John everything that happened that day.

John was shocked; it was nothing like what Louisa had said.

James smirked, "Don't be surprised. You know how your mom and wife treat Jessica. Check with Kevin, and you'll see the truth."

Hearing this, John already knew the answer.

Given James's status, there was no apparent motive for him to deceive.

After a long pause, John said, "James, Jessica's had it rough with the Evans family. As her dad, I feel responsible. Can you promise me to protect her? I can see that she's totally crushing on you."

James narrowed his eyes, wondering if Jessica liked him that much.

But he had Rose to think about. She had given him everything and was experiencing depressed because of him. He couldn't let her down, so he made no promises.

James replied coldly, "Mr. Evans, stay out of my business with Jessica. But keep your family in check. This time, I only taught Kevin a lesson for Jessica's sake. Next time, the Evans family won't be so lucky."

He got out of John's car and went back to his own.

Jessica asked nervously, "What did you talk to my dad about?"

James smiled and ruffled her hair, "Just told him what happened so he won't misunderstand you."

Jessica was skeptical, "Really? He's my dad. Don't be too harsh on him."

She regretted it immediately. She ruminated, 'What did I mean to James? Why would he care about the Evans family?'

Surprisingly, James nodded as if he agreed.

Jessica felt warm inside. Out of the blue, she was enveloped by the illusion that James was indeed a caring husband who lavished her with attention and care.

Meanwhile, John, furious, sent Louisa back to her hometown. She had been part of the plan to marry Jessica off to Kevin, but she was his mother, so he couldn't do much more than that.

Joan wasn't so lucky. She thought a $700,000 settlement would solve everything. But after sending Louisa away, John came back and slapped her hard.

John yelled, "You wicked woman! You had my child and wrecked my family, and I tolerated it when you married in! But scheming against Jessica and trying to marry her off to Kevin? Unforgivable!"

Confronted by John's anger and interrogation, Joan wore a look of innocence and cried, "John, does Jessica's word count for everything? She hates me and Pearl! She'd do anything to get us out of the Evans family."
