Chapter 545 Refusing Rose (3)
James gently reminded her, "Hey, it's not good for you to stay up so late, especially now. I don't want you overworking yourself."
Jessica glanced at the clock and realized how late it was.
Rubbing her sleepy eyes, she smiled at him. "I just want to study a bit more. The exam's this weekend, and with everything that's happened, I've lost so much time. I'm worried I won't pass."
"If you don't pass, it's not the end of the world."
James playfully pinched her nose. "You think I can't take care of you?"
Jessica pouted. "But I don't want to be just a housewife, revolving around my husband and kids. I have my dreams too."
"I'm just teasing you."
James chuckled. "I know about your dreams. I won't stop you from pursuing your career. I'm just worried you'll overdo it. At least for now, you need to rest well during your pregnancy."
Jessica clasped her hands together in a pleading gesture. "Please, just one more hour, okay?"
"Half an hour."
James said sternly, "Just half an hour. Otherwise, I'll carry you to bed right now."
Jessica sighed. "Alright, half an hour it is. But you need to leave. I can't concentrate with you here."
"Okay."
James placed a glass of milk in front of her. "Don't forget to drink your milk. I'm going to take a shower."
Just as he left the study, his phone rang.
The caller ID showed an unknown number.
He hesitated for a moment but decided to answer it.
On the other end, Rose's sorrowful voice came through. "James, where are you? I miss you so much. I can't live without you."
James regretted answering the call.
Previously, when Rose called from her number, he hadn't picked up.
She must have changed her number just to reach him.
James frowned. "I made it clear last time. We shouldn't contact each other anymore. If you need anything, talk to Sean."
"Why would I talk to Sean? He's not the father of my child."
Rose's voice had a hint of drunkenness. "James, if you don't want me, what's the point of having this baby? I can't go on, and neither can the baby."
James felt a chill run down his spine. "Where are you?"
"At a bar."
Rose slurred. "Only by getting drunk can I dream of you, of our past. It's the only way I can fool myself into thinking you haven't left."
James gripped his phone tightly. "Are you crazy? You're pregnant! What are you doing drinking? Stop this nonsense, Rose! It's pointless!"
"Are you worried? I thought you didn't care about me anymore. Why are you so angry?" Rose cried. "You're still afraid something will happen to our baby, right? Please, come to MAX Bar and pick me up. I just want to see you. Otherwise, I'll drink myself to death! Living in this pain is worse than dying."
"Rose, you know I hate being threatened."
James warned her, enunciating each word. "Don't exhaust the last bit of goodwill between us."
With that, he hung up the phone decisively.
But the thought of Rose, a pregnant woman, drinking alone in a bar, made it impossible for him to ignore the situation.
