Chapter 227 Pregnancy (3)

In the courtyard, he glanced up at the bedroom, where only a dim light remained.

James quietly returned to the bedroom. Jessica was already asleep, the warm light casting a cozy glow on her face.

He noticed a half-knitted scarf beside the pillow. James's eyes softened as he picked up the unfinished scarf and examined it.

He remembered Jessica asking him why he didn't wear a scarf and her odd behavior lately. As it unfolded, she had been planning a surprise for him all along. A faint smile appeared on James's lips.

Jessica made him feel a happiness he'd never known. As he bent down to kiss her forehead, he saw her hand peeking out from under the covers. Gently, he tried to tuck it back in but noticed tiny red marks on her fingers. They were from her efforts to knit the scarf.

Guilt washed over him as he thought about the troubles with Rose.

James gazed at the small wounds on her fingers, feeling a twinge of emotion.

Jessica groggily opened her eyes, mumbling, "You're back? I'm so tired."

"Yeah, go back to sleep," he said softly, kissing her lips. Even in her sleep, Jessica melted into his arms.

The weekend flew by, and now it was a big Monday for Jessica—her clinical internship was starting.

Cardiothoracic surgery was her initial rotation. She thought she'd see Nathan, but she was informed that Nathan was still abroad and wouldn't return until next month.

Jessica was assigned to a mentor named Cynthia Wells, who seemed to be in her early thirties.

Cynthia greeted her with a smile. "Are you from Ocean City University Medical School? Why study medicine? There are so many other things a girl could do. Medicine is tough. I regret my choice."

Jessica was surprised by her mentor's words. She replied, "I think being a doctor is noble. Helping people is fulfilling. My mom was a doctor, and I want to be like her."

"Your mom?" Cynthia's eyes lit up. "Which hospital does she work at now? She must be a professor by now, right?"

Cynthia often asked about students' family backgrounds. The dual purpose behind this was twofold: to prevent unintentional offense and to potentially leverage students with parents entrenched in hospital administration for her promotion.

"My mom passed away," Jessica said softly, her voice tinged with sadness.

Cynthia's demeanor shifted to a more neutral expression. "I see," she said, almost dismissively. She handed Jessica a stack of lab reports. "Post these for each bed. And by the way, I'm on duty today, so you'll be staying too. Clinical practice isn't easy; be ready to work hard!"

Jessica wasn't afraid of hard work, especially in her studies. She began posting the lab reports as instructed.

Realizing she would be on duty, she quickly texted James to let him know she wouldn't be coming home that night. An hour passed with no reply from James, which was unusual.
