Jessica fidgeted nervously. "Mr. Howard, I've always seen you as a teacher. I respect you a lot."
Nathan smiled warmly. "Even if you saw me differently, that wouldn't change your respect for me, right?"
Jessica was taken aback, momentarily speechless.
Nathan's expression turned serious. "Jessica, relationships don't have to fit into just one mold. Don't you think?"
Jessica forced a smile, trying to deflect. "Mr. Howard, you're always so wise."
Nathan sensed her reluctance to delve deeper into their relationship.
He decided not to push, not wanting to overwhelm her. After all, he had just picked Jessica up from the OB-GYN clinic. It was clear she was deeply affected by Rose and James, and it was taking a toll on her and the baby.
He spoke gently, "Don't worry about what I said earlier. The doctor said you need to rest. Just sleep, I'll stay here with you."
Jessica hesitated. "Mr. Howard, if I get accepted into your graduate program, could you consider what I mentioned before?"
Nathan paused, thinking. "You mean joining my research team abroad?"
"Yes," Jessica replied, looking at him intently. "Let's keep this between us. I don't want James to know."
Nathan nodded. "That's fine. But have you really thought this through? Are you ready to go overseas while pregnant? And will he let you go?"
Jessica's eyes hardened with determination. "I've made up my mind. Whether he agrees or not, he can't control me forever. This child is mine, and no one can take that away."
Nathan nodded. "If that day comes, I'll help you."
Suddenly, a commotion erupted outside.
A nurse was trying to stop someone. "Sir, you can't just barge in here at night. You need to leave!"
James's voice boomed. "Move aside!"
The nurse, frustrated, warned, "If you keep this up, I'll call security!"
Inside the room, Jessica's face tightened at the sound of his voice.
Nathan smirked. "Mr. Kelly sure knows how to make an entrance."
Jessica, clearly upset, pleaded, "I don't want to see him. Mr. Howard, please get security to remove him."
Nathan reassured her, "Don't worry. If you don't want to go, I won't let him take you."
He stood up and walked out.
James's eyes blazed with anger when he saw Nathan. "I knew it was you! Sneaking around with someone else's wife in the middle of the night. Nathan, I'll ruin your career!"
Nathan remained calm. "Mr. Kelly, you and Jessica are divorced. She's your ex-wife. And right now, she doesn't want to see you."
James had had enough of Nathan. Every time there was trouble between him and Jessica, Nathan was always there.
In a fit of rage, James grabbed Nathan by the collar. "This is your last warning. Hand Jessica over to me!"
