Chapter 131 Car Accident (2)
Joan's eyes glinted with malice as she snarled, "Now that I've caught you, you're not getting away! Come with me!"
She grabbed Mary's sleeve, determined to keep her from returning to the Evans family.
But Mary broke free and dashed across the street.
Suddenly, the screech of brakes filled the air.
Joan watched as a truck hit Mary, sending her flying.
Mary lay in a pool of blood.
People gathered, assuming Mary had jaywalked.
Joan quietly slipped away.
She thought, 'Even fate didn't give Mary a chance to reveal the truth!'
News of Mary's accident soon reached Jessica. She rushed to the hospital, finding John already there, having quickly informed Mary's family.
Jessica, staring at the emergency room doors, asked, "Dad, what happened? How did Mary get into a car accident?"
John frowned. "I rushed here as soon as I got the call. They said it happened right in front of an OB-GYN clinic. Her injuries are severe, and the clinic is private, they didn't admit her and they transferred her here instead."
Jessica was puzzled. "OB-GYN clinic? What was Mary doing there?"
John shrugged. "Maybe she was just passing by?"
Jessica, consumed with worry about Mary's condition, didn't dwell on it.
The doctor emerged from the emergency room. "The patient's condition is critical, with severe brain hemorrhage. Surgery is needed immediately. But even if successful, she might never regain consciousness."
Jessica was shocked. "A vegetative state?"
The doctor nodded. "Right now, saving her life is the priority. If you agree, sign the consent form and pay for the surgery."
John quickly said, "We need to save her! I'll call Mary's son. If he agrees, we'll sign."
After surgery, Mary was moved to the ICU.
Jessica and John didn't leave the hospital until late at night.
John suggested, "Jessica, it's late. Stay here tonight. You can leave tomorrow."
Jessica nodded. "Okay, since James is on a business trip, no one's home anyway."
She wanted to spend time with John. Mary had worked for the Evans family for over twenty years and was like family.
As they talked, Joan returned home.
John scolded her, "Do you even realize what time it is? Pearl doesn't come home at night, and now you're coming back in the middle of the night too! If you don't want to live here, leave!"
Joan's face changed. She muttered, "Mary got hit by a car. Why don't you find the driver? Why yell at me?"
John was taken aback. "How do you know Mary had an accident?"
Joan, startled, quickly said, "I heard it from the servants. Is it serious? Can she be saved?"
Joan had seen Mary hit and covered in blood. She doubted Mary could survive.
John didn't know if Mary would pull through, so he didn't answer.
