Chapter 246 High Surgical Risk (2)

Rose nodded. "Okay, I'll sign."

She was about to head back into the operating room with the doctor when James suddenly grabbed her hand.

"James, what are you doing?" Rose asked, confused.

James looked sad but spoke firmly. "We're not doing this surgery."

"Really?" Rose asked, tears of joy in her eyes. "You don't have to feel pressured. I'm okay with it. If it makes you happy, I'll be at peace."

James knew he couldn't be selfish. He didn't want to lose Jessica or take away Rose's chance to be a mother. The surgery was too risky.

He pulled Rose away. At the ward entrance, he saw Jessica standing there.

Jessica's expression was blank, yet her eyes revealed her pain. Staring at their interlocked hands, she realized she'd lost James' choice.

"Jessica, I'm sorry," James said, making his decision clear.

Jessica gave a bitter smile and walked away.

James' eyes deepened as she left, his gaze unreadable.

Rose timidly suggested, "Should I explain to Miss Evans? So she doesn't misunderstand?"

"No need," James said quietly. "Even if she knows, she won't forgive me."

A fleeting look of triumph crossed Rose's face as she instinctively caressed her belly. It was her biggest advantage.

Jessica muddled through her internship and saw James waiting at the school gate in the evening. She ignored his car and walked past.

James followed and pulled her back.

"Jessica, don't do this," he said, trying to lead her to the car. His tone was gentle, but his actions were forceful, shoving her into the car.

Leaning back, James said wearily, "I'm sorry, I didn't keep my promise."

Jessica, holding back her pain, struggled to speak. "You said if you couldn't do it, we'd get a divorce."

"Jessica, you know I don't want a divorce," James said, his eyes unwavering. "Don't push me."

Jessica broke down. "You're the one pushing me! It's always been you and her pushing me!"

James' patience wore thin. "You were there this morning. You heard what the doctor said. I can't be selfish, thinking only of us and sacrificing Rose's future happiness. We owe her."

Jessica couldn't believe it. "So, I'm the one who came between you two, right?"

"You know that's not what I mean," James said, slamming the steering wheel in frustration. "Jessica, you're a doctor and a woman. You should know how cruel it is for a woman to lose the chance to be a mother. Why can't you put yourself in Rose's shoes? Why push her to this point?"
