Chapter 79 James, I Don't Need a Brother
Jessica raised her glass. "That's all in the past! Tonight, we're celebrating two things: your return to the lab and the fact that you've got me as your one and only friend!"
They were almost done eating when Jessica stood up to pay.
Kylie stopped her. "Hold on. We agreed, this time it's my treat."
Jessica pushed her back into her seat. "When you become a big professor, I'll definitely order the most expensive dishes!"
Despite that, Jessica went to the front desk to pay.
While Kylie waited, James showed up.
Seeing James with a grim face, Kylie was terrified.
She stammered, "Are you looking for Jessica?"
James saw her expression and knew Jessica must have told her about their situation.
He looked at the table set for two and snapped, "Where's Jessica?"
Kylie nervously replied, "She went to pay the bill."
James coldly warned, "No matter what Jessica told you, you'd better keep your mouth shut. Otherwise, it won't be as simple as getting kicked out of the lab."
Suddenly, Jessica's anxious voice came from behind.
"James, what did you say to my friend?"
She walked over and stood in front of Kylie.
Seeing Kylie's frightened face, she knew James must have said something unpleasant.
James sneered, "Have you forgotten how she hurt you so quickly? Jessica, you won't admit it, but you're being stupid. You actually tell her everything!"
A flash of regret and embarrassment crossed Kylie's face.
Jessica defended, "Who I choose to be friends with is my business. Just like who you choose to love is yours!"
Kylie was becoming more and more afraid of James, fearing she might hear something she shouldn't and face his retaliation.
So, she quickly stood up and bid farewell, "Jessica, don't be mad at him. You two talk it out. I'll leave now."
With that, Kylie hurriedly left the place.
Jessica didn't want to go back with James, so she sat back down and continued eating the remaining food, trying to buy some time.
James pulled up a chair and sat next to her, asking, "Why didn't you answer my calls? And you even dared to turn off your phone?"
Jessica was definitely the first woman to hang up on him!
James reached out and took her knife and fork, saying, "Why aren't you talking? Cat got your tongue? Look me in the eyes."
Jessica calmly met his gaze. She wasn't the one in the wrong, so why should she avoid it?
"Fine, I'll say it! I hung up on you because I didn't want Rose to misunderstand. Is that a problem?"
With that, Jessica picked up a new set of utensils, trying to cover her nervousness and sadness by eating.
James's tone softened, and he said quietly, "I didn't know she would show up at your school today. I just wanted to help you out of a tough spot."
Jessica got even angrier and looked at him, questioning, "Is your way of helping me out by saying you're my brother?"
James paused and explained, "Now is not the best time to make our relationship public. We still have many issues to resolve."
Jessica blinked her teary eyes and said gloomily, "James, I don't need a brother."
James said, "Let's go, come home with me. We can talk at home. It's messy here, and the hygiene isn't good. Don't come here to eat again."
Jessica laughed self-deprecatingly and refused, "If you think this place insults your noble status, you can leave on your own."
