Chapter 269 Not Keeping Promises

Rose was totally freaking out. The last thing she wanted was to have Ambrose's baby and be tied to him forever. But since Ambrose had bailed on her, she had to figure out her own escape plan.

So, she played it cool, acting like she was on board with his plans, just to keep him off her back for a while.

That evening, Jessica got a text from James. He told her to meet him at the hospital entrance after work. They were gonna grab dinner and catch a movie.

Jessica was a bit surprised. James never usually had time for things like this. But a date with James? She wasn't going to pass that up.

James saw her reply and smirked. Yep, women needed to be sweet-talked and spoiled. He had to spend more time with her, make her feel secure, especially after all the crap she'd been through.

They'd been married for two years, and he hadn't really taken her out. He thought, 'Girls her age probably want their boyfriend's love and attention, right?'

With that in mind, James wrapped up his work and headed to Ocean City University Hospital.

But on the way, he got a call from the hospital. "Are you Mr. Kelly? Miss Rose Morris was in a car accident and needs surgery ASAP. We need a family member's signature. She gave us your number."

James pulled over, his voice tense. "What happened? Which hospital?"

After getting the details, he turned the car around and sped to the hospital.

Jessica had been waiting at the hospital entrance for almost two hours. She kept checking her phone, but there was nothing. No texts, no calls.

It was getting dark, and the cars were thinning out. Still no sign of James.

Jessica felt a pang of sadness. He was the one who suggested the movie. It was already 8:30 PM; he should've been there by now. She pulled out her phone and called him.

Just a busy tone. No answer. After several tries, still nothing.

Jessica shoved her phone back in her pocket, muttering angrily, "Jerk, can't even keep a promise."

She had no choice but to face the cold wind and head back to the villa alone.

As soon as she walked in, she asked Olivia, "Has James come back?"

"Mr. Kelly hasn't returned," Olivia said, looking concerned. "Mrs. Kelly, did you get a chance to eat?"

Jessica shook her head, feeling crushed. "I'm not hungry." With that, she trudged upstairs in silence.

The bedroom felt emptier than ever, and Jessica's heart felt just as hollow.

She grabbed her pajamas and headed to the bathroom. Her eyes landed on the scarf she had knitted for him not long ago.

She took it out, staring at the not-so-perfectly knitted scarf, feeling a wave of bitterness. She had been so happy while making it.

Back then, she had really wanted to give it to him before the weather turned cold. But now, it was already freezing, just like tonight, with the biting wind. She had waited in the cold for so long but never saw him.

Jessica shoved the scarf into the farthest corner of the wardrobe, not wanting to see it again. Even if it stayed there, she didn't want to give it to him anymore.

It was super late when she finally heard a car pull into the yard.

A bit later, James came upstairs and walked into the bedroom. He looked worn out and distant.
