Chapter 348 Sharing a Bed with James? (2)

Seeing Nathan's sour face, Cynthia smirked and said, "Mr. Howard, I don't know what your deal with Jessica is, but you're sticking up for her and pinning this on me. If you knew what shady stuff she's been up to behind your back, you'd totally regret it!"

Nathan's brow furrowed as he shot back, "I don't care who she is. All I know is she's brave, fair, and kind-hearted, unlike you, who just spews lies and twists the truth! I'm taking this to the hospital leadership. You've really messed up this time, and I can't cover for you."

"Go ahead, but you don't have any proof, do you?" Cynthia raised an eyebrow. "Worst case, I'll drag Jessica down with me. If you don't protect me, you won't be able to protect her either! I've been here for ten years. Who do you think the leadership will side with?"

Nathan, usually so calm, was furious for the first time, his temples throbbing.

He glared at Cynthia and said, "You better hope I don't find any evidence. If I do, I'll make sure you're out of the cardiology field for good."

Cynthia's heart skipped a beat, startled by Nathan's sinister look. She'd always thought he was easygoing, but now she saw a terrifying side of him.

After leaving Nathan's office, Jessica didn't head home. Instead, she went to the neurosurgery department. She knew Gerald didn't have much time left and wanted to spend her rare break with him.

James was surprised to see her. "Weren't you supposed to be at work?"

Gerald chimed in, "Jessica, don't let me keep you from your job. Go back."

Jessica, not wanting to dwell on what happened earlier, smiled and said, "Grandpa, I have these two days off. Don't worry, it won't affect my work."

Just then, James's phone rang. He glanced at Gerald and Jessica, a flash of panic in his eyes, and quickly stepped outside to take the call.

Jessica guessed who it was and pushed aside the unpleasant feeling, chatting with Gerald as if nothing was wrong.

James soon returned, looking uneasy. "Grandpa, something came up at the company. I need to go."

Gerald waved him off. "Go ahead!"

James left, and Jessica kept telling herself not to care, trying to accept that Rose and James were a family now. But she still felt downhearted.

James rushed to Rose's house. As soon as he walked in, Rose said pitifully, "James, it's my fault. I tried to stand and walk, but I lost my balance and fell. My stomach hurts a bit. Should I see a doctor?"

James frowned. "The doctor said it takes time for bones and muscles to heal. Your leg injury is severe; it'll be at least six months before you can walk. Didn't you listen?"

He then scolded the caregiver, "Didn't I tell you to stay with Miss Morris at all times?"

The caregiver nervously apologized, "I'm sorry, Mr. Kelly. I just went to the kitchen to cook, and Miss Morris..."
