Chapter 64 Forced to Flatter Him

Jessica was a bit taken aback. Was James doing this because of her?

The counselor tugged her along, saying, "Come on, Jessica, you have to attend the principal's luncheon today and properly thank Mr. Kelly. He probably made that big donation because of your brave actions."

So, Jessica got dragged to the luncheon.

At the table, glasses clinked, and Jessica found herself sitting in the farthest corner, the only student there.

James sat at the head of the table, getting all the attention from the school leaders, who took turns toasting him.

Jessica glanced at herself, then at him, and it hit her how different their worlds were.

Outside, James was always the shining star.

She absentmindedly picked at her food, listening to the usually stern leaders fawn over James, feeling both disdain and helplessness.

Then the principal spoke up, "Jessica, Mr. Kelly turned down many engagements to present you with an award today. You should at least toast him to show your gratitude."

The dean of academic affairs started pouring Jessica a glass of whiskey.

He urged, "Jessica, finish this drink and properly thank Mr. Kelly."

The leaders' coaxing left Jessica in a tough spot.

She'd only ever had beer, and one glass made her dizzy. Whiskey was too strong and bitter for her.

"I can't drink," Jessica said honestly.

This, however, displeased the principal.

Jessica looked toward James, hoping for some help.

Unexpectedly, James just held up his glass, waiting for her to toast him.

His eyes were filled with mockery, and Jessica realized James wasn't here with good intentions.

She thought, 'But why? Isn't he here to present me with an award today? I've been moved for so long.'

Under the pressure from the leaders and James, Jessica reluctantly took her glass and walked over to him.

Seeing that she wouldn't even give him a pleasant look, James said disappointedly, "If Jessica can't drink, then don't force her."

The school leaders quickly toasted James and apologized, casting reproachful glances at Jessica.

Standing beside him, Jessica felt too embarrassed to return to her seat, feeling extremely tormented.

To ease the tension, the dean of academic affairs suddenly said, "Mr. Kelly, you're so young and successful. You probably don't even have time to think about marriage. We've known each other for a long time, and many socialites in the education circle admire you."

Jessica's heart sank, and she looked at James nervously, waiting for his answer.

Noticing Jessica's gaze, James slightly curled his lips and said, "There's no rush for marriage. I'll rely on you to help me find someone."

"Oh, Mr. Kelly, don't worry about that. I've always been on the lookout for you!" the dean quickly flattered. "But with your outstanding qualities, the woman who matches you must also be very exceptional. I'll have to select for you carefully!"

Everyone joined in the banter.

Only Jessica's eyes showed evident sadness and hurt.

As Mrs. Kelly, she was so transparent that no one knew, like an insignificant ornament.

Seeing the atmosphere lighten up, the principal signaled Jessica to return to her seat, not to be an eyesore and upset James.

Unexpectedly, Jessica suddenly said, "Mr. Kelly, I toast to you."

The table suddenly fell silent, and everyone looked at Jessica.

A fleeting look of surprise crossed James's face. He raised his glass, his eyes showing a hint of deep meaning.

Jessica's eyes were filled with hurt and disappointment as she downed the drink in one go.

Instantly, the strong taste burned down her throat, making her feel like her heart was on fire.

Jessica's eyes grew moist, and she silently told herself she wasn't crying; it was just that the whiskey was too strong and too bitter.
