Chapter 284 Prepare Your Wife for the Worst
No one dared to make a peep and they all scrambled back to their seats. Sean led Michael into the president's office. "Mr. Kelly, Mr. Watson's here," he said.
"Alright, you can go now," James replied.
After Sean left, James turned to Michael. "So, how'd it go? Any new leads from the cops today?"
Michael plopped down across from him, taking a sip of his coffee. He sighed, "Man, don't even get me started. This case is a real nightmare, one of the toughest I've ever seen."
"What do you mean?" James asked. "Even you think it's tough?"
Michael let out a sharp breath. "I'm a lawyer, not a magician! Honestly, our chances of winning are slim. The evidence is stacked against us, and with Rose being pregnant, the judge is almost definitely gonna side with her."
James frowned. "That driver said John told him to do it. Did you dig into the driver's background?"
Michael nodded. "Yeah, had someone look into it. Nothing fishy. He's single, just has an old, sick mom. Plus, the cops found a ten grand transfer from John to the driver."
James's eyes widened. "Ten grand? He'd throw John under the bus for just ten grand?"
Michael thought for a moment. "Maybe his family's in a bad spot. Desperation makes people do crazy things. I've seen folks do wild stuff for a few grand."
James still couldn't wrap his head around it. "Would someone really wreck their future for ten grand?" He sighed. "What does John say?"
"He still denies everything," Michael said, shaking his head. "Claims the money was a loan, but there's no IOU or anything to prove it."
Frustrated, James tossed the documents onto the table. "Is there no other way? Is John definitely going to prison?" he asked.
Michael said, "Not necessarily. There's one last shot: Rose could drop the charges or write a forgiveness letter. If that happens, John might get a suspended sentence and dodge prison."
James stared at him, exasperated. "Getting Rose to drop the charges? That's harder than winning the case!" he remarked.
Michael shrugged, a hint of resignation in his eyes. "Then you'll have to brace your wife for the worst."
James's worry deepened. If he could tell Jessica the whole truth, he would have done it by now. But the thought of her reaction paralyzed him. He didn't want to see her upset, losing sleep and appetite over this.
James sighed deeply, "Let me think about it some more."
As Michael stood to leave, his eye caught the scarf hanging on the coat rack. Remembering the secretaries' gossip, he chuckled.
James noticed the smirk and shot him a glare. "What? You've been single for so long, now you're jealous?"
Michael's laughter grew louder. "It's obvious you love her a lot. Otherwise, you wouldn't be strutting around in that scarf!"
