Chapter 361 He Will Definitely Make Amends (3)
James was kicking himself. He thought, 'I gotta fix this mess and help Jessica sort things out before Nathan does. If I don't, will Jessica's heart be completely taken over by Nathan, leaving no room for me?'
After finishing his cigarette, James dragged himself back to Gerald's hospital room.
To his surprise, Jessica was already there. She was still smiling gently, like nothing had happened, chatting with Gerald. He couldn't hear what she was saying, but it had Gerald laughing out loud.
James felt even worse. She was already feeling so bad, yet she still put on such a good front, not letting Gerald see any cracks. But he knew that her heart, at this moment, must be deeply wounded.
James stood at the door, quietly watching the smiling Jessica, not wanting to ruin the moment.
It was Gerald who noticed James standing at the door.
Gerald, always sharp, yawned and said, "Jessica, I'm tired and need to rest. You and James should get some sleep too. By the way, I had someone change your bed to a bigger one so you could sleep more comfortably."
Jessica was taken aback for a moment. When she went out to check, she found that the single bed had indeed been replaced with a double bed.
James couldn't help but give Gerald a grateful look. If it weren't for Gerald, Jessica might have refused to sleep with him, claiming the bed was too small. Now, the bed could easily fit two people, and Jessica had no more excuses to leave.
Jessica said, "Thank you, Grandpa."
"It's nothing." Gerald said affectionately. "I should be thanking you for staying with James and keeping me company in the hospital."
After Gerald fell asleep, Jessica and James went to the outer room. She sat by the bed, her expression indifferent, as if she had shed the happy smile she had shown in front of Gerald.
James's eyes showed a hint of guilt. He sat beside her and said softly, "I'm sorry. Today's incident was totally my fault. I didn't expect you to go through so much at the hospital."
"It's fine," Jessica said coldly. "I'm tired and want to sleep."
James knew it meant Jessica didn't accept his apology and didn't want to talk to him.
"Jessica," James said, holding her hand in his palm and looking deeply into her eyes. "Don't worry. I will make amends for this. I won't let your school expel you!"
Jessica sneered and said, "This time, how many lab buildings are you planning to donate to our school? How much equipment are you planning to donate to the hospital?"
James was slightly taken aback. At first, he did have such thoughts. After all, in the face of money, the attitudes of those hospital directors and principals would dramatically change; they were no different from ordinary people.
Jessica said, "But James, you don't understand what I need. I need my innocence, the recognition of my innocence by everyone! This is not something you can buy with money!"
James nodded and said, "I understand."
He didn't explain further or say anything more.
That night, although they slept in the same bed, Jessica exuded coldness. She still slept tightly against the wall, trying to keep the maximum distance from him.
James slept on the edge of the bed. He thought perhaps this was the only way not to provoke her resentment.
Images of Nathan and Jessica hugging flashed through his mind. He knew that his relationship with Jessica could no longer withstand any more turmoil. Otherwise, he would only push Jessica further away.
