Chapter 236 He Always Treated Her Like a Fool (1)
Cynthia started writing up Rose's exam order. Rose glanced at Jessica but spoke to Cynthia. "Doctor, can the doctor next to you come with me? I've been really dizzy and having bad chest tightness. I'm scared I might faint if I go alone."
Cynthia, wary of another complaint after losing $200 from her bonus last month, nodded. "Jessica, why don't you go with her?"
"Sure," Jessica said, knowing Rose was probably being manipulative. Sometimes, you just can't avoid life's curveballs.
Jessica followed Rose out. Rose rubbed her slightly rounded belly, watching Jessica's reaction. "Didn't expect to run into you here, Miss Evans."
Jessica rolled her eyes. "Cut the act. You came here to show off you're pregnant, right?"
Rose smirked, both smug and playful. "Don't you want to know whose baby it is?"
Jessica's heart sank, but she kept her cool. "I don't care. I don't want to know anything about you."
"Or are you scared to find out?" Rose teased, dialing James's number and putting it on speaker.
The call connected quickly.
"James, I've been having chest tightness, so I came to the hospital," Rose said, sounding pitiful. "The doctor wants me to do some tests. Do you think our baby will be okay?"
Jessica held her breath, staring at Rose's phone.
James's voice came through, making Jessica feel utter despair.
"It'll be fine. Didn't the doctor say yesterday the baby is healthy?" James reassured. "Don't worry about it."
Rose replied sweetly, "Okay, I'll let you know the results. Don't worry about me."
She hung up, looking triumphant as she watched Jessica's face go pale.
Jessica couldn't hold it together anymore. She felt cold and desperate, like she was in an ice cave.
Rose chuckled. "Miss Evans, don't think you can win James's heart with your tricks. He loves me, and the baby is mine. You? He was just playing with you!"
Jessica didn't argue. Her eyes, once clear, were now hollow. Everything blurred as she realized she was crying in front of the person she hated most.
Rose was right. James had been toying with her. If he cared at all, he wouldn't have deceived her, making her feel like a fool.
Why did he create such a beautiful lie, trapping her in that bubble of deceit, knowing he couldn't make it come true?
