Chapter 136 She Can't Outshine Me
Pearl got nervous, worried Jessica would notice she was trying to hide her pale complexion from the miscarriage.
They went downstairs, and Pearl linked arms with Jack in front of Jessica.
She joked, "Jack, remember, she's my sister! No secret meetings behind my back, okay?"
John looked annoyed but kept quiet since others were around.
Joan chimed in sarcastically, "Yeah, some people have no shame."
John slammed his utensils down with a loud clatter and warned, "If you can't talk nicely, don't talk at all."
Jessica curled her lips in helpless frustration, regretting listening to John and getting herself entangled in the chaotic mess of the Evans family's drama.
She didn't eat and said, "Dad, I'm heading to the hospital to check on Mary. Her son said the surgery went well."
Pearl and Joan exchanged worried glances, their grip on their silverware faltering.
Louisa, eager for Jessica to leave, quickly said, "Since Jessica has something to do, let's eat and discuss Pearl's wedding."
John felt bad for Jessica and said, "You go ahead, Jessica. I'll come by later."
"It's fine, take your time," Jessica said, then left.
Jack's gaze instinctively followed her, but a sharp pinch on his thigh from Pearl jolted him back to reality.
The meal was supposed to be about discussing the wedding, but Jack kept dodging the topic whenever Louisa or Joan brought it up.
In the end, nothing was decided about the wedding, but Pearl didn't care. She just wanted Jack there to support her.
After dinner, Jack went to Pearl's room.
Jack pleaded, "I did everything you asked. Now, will you get the abortion?"
Pearl replied slyly, "What's the rush? Getting the abortion now would be too easy for you."
"What do you want?" Jack said, trying to keep his cool. "I came to support you and your mom. What devious scheme are you plotting now to torment me?"
Pearl handed him a magazine, pointing to a rare pink diamond. "Look at this. There are only two in the world. One was made into a necklace, the other into a bracelet. That necklace was auctioned off by James a few days ago, probably to give to Jessica. She can't outshine me!"
Jack, not usually interested in jewelry, had to admit the pink diamond was stunning.
He pondered, 'If Jessica wore it, that pink diamond would definitely complement her complexion.'
Seeing him silent, Pearl snapped, "Jack! Did you hear me? Buy this for me, and I'll get the abortion!"
